xbox 360 hard drive question 5GB missing!!

right i got my 360 premium tuesday and i hook it up setup my xbox live and notice i only have 11.8gb space available.

i look through the drive and notice theres and xbox welcome video at nearly 2gb and some demos so i delete these and i check my drive and it says i got 13.7gb free.

so i look through again and all i have i maybe 500MB in vehicle downloads for forza and save games and profiles.

the question were the hell is the other 5gb gone i thought they were 20gb drives

Its for the Swap-Space for original xbox games, and cache space for 360 games.

Firstly, when a box for a hard drive says 1Gb, it doesn't actually have 1Gb. What it has is 1 billion bytes, and an actual gig as your computer recognises is is about 1.07 billion bytes because 1Gb=1024Mb and so on. So you actually have just under 19 gig.

Then you've got some space reserved for game cache and patches, and some space for the emulation for original xbox games.

The vast majority of the missing space is for the Xbox backwards compatiblity - as every original XBOX had an 8 gig HD inside, the emulator also needs a huge lot of space to mimic that - it's used for cache space, and for downloadable content - ie Halo2 levels etc.

Problem is, with the Premium/Pro only having 20gb, having 13gb free isn't that useful now - with the movies, and xbox original downloads that are now available.

On the 120gb drive, 113gb is free.
