Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Does anyone know of any ( good ) multiplayer simulation and economic strats.... I'm thinking of games a little unusual like....
Dungeon Keeper 1/2 ( that actually works online )
Industry Giant 2
Civilization
Caesar 4
Sim City 2000 ( shame 3/4 arent MP )
Seem to struggle to find some nice enjoyable multiplayer simulation type games now :(
Many Thanks
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Civ 4 is quite good, if you haven't played that. Heroes of might and magic 5 is meant to be good too.
I dont think they are very sim-ish though. Civ4 maybe is. But HOMM5 is more RPG'ish/RTS'ish really. I don't follow that kind of game very closely, because there aren't much about. The only one like that, which I'm really looking forward to.... is..... Spore!!!!!!!!
I used to play SimCity 2000 as a kid, but never played anything like that since. I find I get bored of them, because I spend an entire weekend making the most amazing city ever, I build, watch it flourish, build some more, watch it flourish some more, build some more, watch it fill the entire map, and then I kind of sit there looking at it thinking, "Ok job done, I want to play something different now".
p.s. I would love someone to make a really good, modern, Transport Tycoon game.. Preferably with multiplayer. Maybe Spore will just clean up in this area of gaming though.
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
yeah, but spore is going to come out next millennium at the rate its going....
there is freeCiv
have you thought about MMO's like eve online, there is quite a lot of financial strategy on the corporation level
other than that, i cant really help you
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Yeah I like Civ 4... good game, though it can go on a bit!!!
I'd love something like Sim City/Theme Hospital with some LAN aspects, even if it's only to see who advances faster or whatever.
Hey, I need a break from FPS's once in a while! :D
I'm not really interested in MMO's, mainly because they eat your life away!! Bloody thingsa re literally endless.
Tried FreeCiv, that was pretty good fun ;)
Any more ideas people?
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
It may not be quite what you're lookiing for but Eve-Online has complex economics and economic PvP.
Not exactly a game you can dip in and out of though.....
Jiust a thought
Chks
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Just thought!!! There is a game called "Galactic Civilizations 2" which gets unbelievable ratings in reviews. I haven't played it yet but I'd like to. No idea if its as good as people say, but it seems like it could be special. (I get the impression its basically Civ4 in space, but with more depth).

There are actually quite a few games that are kind of similar to those games. Like restaurant tycoon and stuff. Infact, there are about 5000000 tycoon games, if you count all the smaller ones made by smaller companies. There are some nicely polished games too like a Railroad Tycoon game I played last year. Unfortunately, they seem to lack depth (big time). That railroad game was lovely to look at, but basically a case of building two stations, click the track icon and drag a track from station to station.. and sit back and watch the money roll in :( There was a bit more to it than that, but not much. I got bored of it in just a day.
I used to quite like playing Age of Wonders 2 (and the expansion: Shadow Magic). It was similar to Civ 4. Some aspects where simplified a bit, but some aspects where better (the combat was proper turn based combat where you control all the units). I quite liked how if the game was really dragging on, you could end up just nuking the enemy to death with magic. But it required that you played well for the entire game to really be able to do that. I really liked that game. I played Heroes of Might and Magic 5 though briefly, and I think that may be a better game.
Hmm what else? There are some RTS's like Rise of Nations and stuff, and Supreme Commander and C&C etc... which are awesome. Its real time Civ4 basically, so its a bit more action packed and faster paced. And they are usually at the very most, a couple of hours long - unlike CIV4 which can go on forever.
Theres a game similar to SimCity2000 by the way. There was a really popular one called "Pharaoh" which I think might have had an expansion (or more). And there are others like that too. One called Zeus: Master of Olympus which is similar, but some people like it more.
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Ahhh, Mr Arcobat...
I see we share a passion for many similar games!! AoW2 was great... we should play it together some time... might have to buy it again though! :D
The problem with most of the tycoon games is the lack of multiplayer though, which is the key element I am after.
RTS's I love, but they aren't really the same as Civ/Sim City and the likes... I play C&C fairly often and I can't wait for Starcraft 2 ( was a big SC nut! ).
I will check out Pharaoh and Galactic Civ and report back though, thanks :D
Add me to IM if you have it... maybe we could sort out some games together ;)
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Yeah the lack of multiplayer is a real shame in a lot of them =C I think Pharoah is ok, but I think Gal Civ 2 might be well worth checking out though. It gets great scores =O Only down side seems to be no multiplayer too :C
GameSpot Score 9.0
92% (firing squad)
4.5 out of 5 stars gamespy
8.7/10 IGN.
I did play it once at afriends house but I had no idea what I was doing.
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
ooh, i just remembered one.
try looking up "sword of the stars" it is a great space strategy game with turned based strategic level play and real time tactical level play, which is really fun. however multilayer does take a long time, although i believe it can be saved. and occasionally you can get unlucky and have your home world knocked out by a meteor shower on the second turn... but i guess thats just life. has some really great twists. like half your and your enemies AI enhanced fleet going rogue :lol:
that being said, it is a really great in depth game with really unique species that also has mass lasery, missiley, and big-cannons-that-launch-neutronium-asteroidsy destruction
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Acrobat mentioned the railroad games, if you were talking about the sid meirs railroads game then you are right it was awful, but I find Railroad tycoon 3 much better. There are a few easy maps but there are some where it can be quite difficult and you have to start really planning routes carefully to get resourses from one place to another so you can make another good good there from them to ship them on and so forth. Not everyones cup of tea but I found it stunningly addictive, never done multiplayer on it but there is a button that says multiplayer on the main menu!

Yeah thats the one, Sid Meiers railroads or whatever. Rubbish :( That other one sounds nice though! I think I used to have Railroad Tycoon 1, about a hundred years ago =) Sounds interesting, specially if that multiplayer works online!
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Thanks very much for all the replies chaps... I've got some of the suggestions on order at the moment :D
Also found one when browsing amazon that looked like it might be okay.. called 'Anno 1701' which looks pretty cool...
Will let you know how I get on with them all... any more suggestions welcome of course, the more the merrier! :D
Re: Modern simulation / economic strat games?
Yeah, I liked Anno 1601 (I think it was anyway), 1701 was the follow up but I'm almost sure it didn't get as good reviews as the first. More modern games like this are sorely needed, there hasn't been a proper economic sim since Transport Tycoon and sim city 2000 apart from the civ series.
