Why the trend in online gaming...?

Is it just me, or do most new games coming out seem to be focussing a lot on online gaming? Every month seems to bring with it a load more MMORPG, online FPS etc.

I quite like the odd online RTS game, but I don't have the time to spend hours online at a time. What happened to the games with decent single player campaigns? Star Trek Elite Forces, Unreal, the original C+C etc....

I agree, I have even seen Xbox360 games that a re co-op only! No single player game at all....

I think game makers are just giving us the basic game and we make the entertainment ourself.

Re: Why the trend in online gaming...?

One thing about online gaming that i like so much. The social side of things. Having played online since BF1942 i find it hard to buy a game with no online function. I find single player games pretty boring, and tend to have much more fun online. The game companies are only providing what us consumers want and with the advent of cheap fast internet access it makes sense to use it to its full advantage.

I'd much rather have a blast at UT online than be stuck with bots.

Plus i'm addicted to World of Warcraft

Really? The only one that comes to mind is Final Fantasy 11.

That's great if you happen to have no distractions. With a Mrs, a 9 month old baby, and a puppy, I can't necessarily just keep playing for 30 mins+. I might need to pause and continue later.

Considering the type of games i play, 30 mins is enough to have a blast, quit to do what-ever you need to do, then go back to it. Most of my online friends in WoW do the same sort of thing, pop on, have a chat, do a quest/farm etc, then log off. No one say'd that you have to give a game hours at a time to get fun out of it. Plus pausing a game can be difficult at the best of times, i hate coming back to games if i've had to pause them to go do something, i lose track of what i'm doing.

The Witcher is the newest game that I'm playing. Single player only and completely amazing.

Re: Why the trend in online gaming...?

I remember years ago wishing more games would have multiplayer features, things have certainly changed a lot since then. I think most game companies realise that games that have a multiplayer element to it are likely to sell more than a game that just has single player. It depends on the type of game though.. obviously your average fps or rts is easily extended upon to allow multiplayer.

However taking CoD4 as an example, great single player and multiplayer, but as good as it was, the single player campaign was desperately short. As much as I enjoyed it, I was feeling a little short changed.

I prefer online games to single players. SP, especially in FPS games gets boring very fast.

Re: Why the trend in online gaming...?

Theres lots of great SP games out just now. Even UT3 has an SP part (campaign mode). mass effect, the witcher, assassins creed, gears of war, crysis are all SP based, most games still are.

Re: Why the trend in online gaming...?

i personally find online games much more fun.

the MMO i spend most of my time on is planetside, and what i love about it is that everything is so unpredictable, everyone is a human so you have no idea if they are a n00b that will sit there missing, a vet that will duck, cover, jump etc and own your ass, or a joker that will run at you with a flamer....

i think thats why multiplayer is so much more fun, especially when there are lots of people there like with MMOs

why companies do it though? well, they dont have to spend loads of money on people to make storylines and lots of maps/areas.... not to mention with mmos they will get $5-20 a month all the time you are playing it

This is what I was going to say. I think it might also be that nowadays they can get away with only putting in a few hours of single-player game because a lot of gamers only have 20-minute attention spans and can't be arsed to battle through 50 huge levels. They play SP until it gets difficult, and then just play online now and again.

Plus which, network gaming scales better. At launch they can pay for a month or two of rental for servers etc to support lots of players. If the game tanks they can scale back the amount they pay for, if it's a huge hit they will have enough sales revenue to pay for scaling up a bit. It's much less of a gamble than paying millions for a bunch of artists to build textures, levels and animations that you never know if people will pay for.

I agree with every you said - I'm a WOW nut, too.

A mate of mine doesn't get online shooters at all though. Multiplayer games, yes, but not online ones. RTS as well.

Re: Why the trend in online gaming...?

I agree that online gaming can be fun due to the fact that you involve other actual players, but I still love a great single player game for the same reason that I love a good film. Its something that I can experience and interpret in my own way. To say its boring is a bit off the mark IMO - You could call films 'boring' if you watch a rubbish one, but a decent film can have a great affect.

Personally, I prefer single player gaming for narrative - I get all my team needs through football
