Half Life2: EP2 - Steam Update Renders game practiaclly unplayable

Well it looks like Valve have made another mess up. Quite a few people over at the Steam Forums are complaining that a recent patch has caused HL2:EP2 to crash at certain spots in the game. People who have finished the game and are now ruinning back through it also say that before the patch the game was fine and after the game crashes.

I myself are also finding the game hard to play due to crashes at the same locations as other people have reported.

    Fantastic stuff from Valve.... again

I don't have EP2 but yesterday I had a BSOD for the first time in months when I opened Steam.

Well there is still no word on an update and the mods are very very quiet over the subject. The EP2 forum is now just based around the crashes, there are 4 major areas of the game where crashes occur and either looking at a blank wall is needed to get past the area or noclip needs to be used.

Pretty poor if you ask me.

if it wasn't for steam, you wouldn't have had to install the patch, but of course, steam forces it on you....

Steam does worry me sometimes with it covert patching system - there's hardly any sign at all unless you happen to catch it downloading that anything's changed. That's not a scenario that people would be happy to accept in other fields, particularly anything where you depended on software reliability, but somehow they seem to think it's reasonable for games that you've paid for. It means that Valve can, in a click, stop anyone from playing HL2 on Windows 2000, for instance - it's already happened to Windows 95/98. Although I think Steam actually works well they have too much of a faith that patches will always work properly - surely in a single player game I should be allowed back to a previous version if I want to use it?

Okay, so there's a bug in thier latest patch, I guess they'll be fixing it rather sharpish for sure. Most other online games will force you to stay up to date, like WoW, and WoW updating is frankly... crap, you try getting a retail copy up to date in less than 4 hours. (Unless they've woken up in the past year since I played last)

Guild wars also has a mostly seamless background downloading system, you will have to download new files for an area if you go there and you don't have them, but it's all integrated and is by far the best system.

No it doesn't. Just uncheck the 'keep my game up to date' box and it won't bother with any patches unless you choose to install them.

Update: Oh dear. I'm having problems with Portal. I know it uses A HL2.exe (not sure if it uses the same one as HL2 itself... haven't looked yet, not on that computer).
I can't exit portal. that's a bit of a p1ss3r. If I try to quit, it just hangs. I can access task manager or log off, but it's v annoying.
Not tried it for HL2 yet...

Yep, HL2 and ep 2 both fooked up as well.

Goddammit, that's irritating. They play fine, and then just will not shut. Delete and redownload, perhaps?

    edit: Or shut down Nod32.

Odd... Nod32 used to kick small memory footprint, awesome a$$. This new version maxes out my CPU if I try to download large files, and may perhaps be farking around with shutdown of HL2 as well.
    Further experiments needed, I think.
