Playstation 3 vs X-box 360 Elite - Sensible advice required within...

Right, basically I shall be receiving my first wage packet from my new job on Friday and by Saturday I'd like a chunk of it sat under my T.V in console form, already got a Wii in downstairs and as much as I enjoy playing it having two of the same console in the same house would be pointless so thats the Wii ruled out from the beginning.

Now, before I get to what I want out of the console lets eliminate what I don't want....

I couldn't give a badgers crump about Halo 3, backwards compatibility, the blu-ray hd-dvd format war or how quiet the drives are; what matters here in this thread is the console itself and how it plays games both online and offline.

Hardware wise the 360 is off to a running start for me as I prefer the controller over Sony's offering plus the 120gig drive is a lovely bonus, I know it's the older console though so just how much difference does the slightly aged hardware of the 360 make to the games when compared to the PS3? and what of this red ring of death phenomenon? How common is it with the Elite?

Games wise I'm already sold on Call of Duty 4 but being mult-format that really doesn't help the situation, as far as exclusive titles go is there anything spectacular out now or in the pipeline that should be swaying my decision bearing in mind that within twelve months I will probably have bought whichever system I don't grab this weekend? Also consider that I've had my head in the sand for the past year or so and while I've ooh'd and ahh'd at screenshots and video's of a few games on each system I've not really read up on many of them let alone played many of them, ergo feel free to lob recommendations my way

Re: Playstation 3 vs X-box 360 Elite - Sensible advice required within...

    * the 360 has a better games library right now. anyone disagreeing is just plain wrong. it's slowly BEGINNING to improve on the ps3, but there's over a year of 360 releases to compete with

    * the 360 hardware isn't very reliable compared to the competition, but MS are pretty good at sending replacements (although not quickly)

    * 360 online is infinitely superior, but costs money - about £40 a year if memory serves

    * for the most part, multi-format games on 360 look better & play smoother than on the ps3 (e.g. orange box, PES, pretty much any game you could mention tbh)

    * in the end, the decision has to come down to games. make a list of the games you want to play, for both systems, and buy the console with the longer list

    * the ps3 platform is more "open", e.g. games like ut3 might get mods & maps on the ps3, the best you can hope for on the 360 is paid map packs

    * the ps3 is a little bit more dumb in many cases, e.g. the battery on a controller will drain if you forget to explicitly switch it off

    * the lack of blu-ray drive on the 360 is starting to hit a crunch for space-centric games, e.g. ut3, but works in its favor for smaller games (as dvd is faster)

    * ps3 controllers are rechargable as standard, 360 ones require a paid addon (though the cable for the 360 is longer than a 2 feet, thankfully). ps3 controllers have tilt sensors, 360 ones don't. 360 controllers have rumble, ps3 ones don't except as a separate purchase, currently japan only

You sir are both a gentleman and a scholar, that damn near covers everything, you have however by way of your final point posed a new question, I'm guessing that more space-centric titles as they arrive will be ported to the 360 in hd-dvd form meaning the optional hd-dvd drive will eventually become not quite so optional?

The hd-dvd drive can't play games. There will probably be 2 DVD games soon!!!

i believe they exist already in japan. but you're right - they'll never mandate the hd-dvd drive, it'll be multi-disc for big games, where that's possible (they've now granted permission for some types of games to require a hard disk, which is a change from before)

I dont seem to have that problem, when i use controller to turn off console, throw controller to the coffee table and it automatically powers off after about 5 mins.

Would I be correct in thinking that the newer revision of the Xbox 360 using the 65 nm process CPUs will be more reliable and less likely to overheat than before? So no more red ring of death?

In fact, I've just found the article:

AnandTech: Microsoft's Xbox 360 goes 65nm: Falcon Dissection and Power Consumption

Re: Playstation 3 vs X-box 360 Elite - Sensible advice required within...

Hex is right, but you can condense it down to this:

The best console you can buy at the moment is an Xbox360 Elite. The 360 has more games, more good games, a far superior online setup, and its really the only choice.

The PS3 has the advantages of a bigger HD and better looks, both of these can be sorted by buying an Elite, which gives you 120gb of space and a fine looking machine.

The only issue left is the hardware reliability of the 360. The Elite is not immune from this and can (probably will) break.

In short, the 360 kills the PS3 stone dead at the moment, with the few advantages the PS3 has countered by the Elite. Unless your console breaking is the primary interest there is no case for buying a PS3 at present.

    End of story.

    in theory you're right

in practice, there's no rational way of knowing what process a console was made with before opening the box

Its a bit of a tricky situtation buying a new console. The PS3 has some awesome exclusive coming some time soon! Metal Gear Solid 5, Metal Gear Online and the upcoming Gran Turismo! I believe Time Crisis 4 and Virtua Cop 4 is coming out on it soon if lightgun games are your thing... However there isnt much around in terms of dates for any of the above.

The XBOX 360 I think would be the better choice at this time due to the greater variety of games out at the moment. The PS3 given time may well become a more tempting propersition when it gets killer games.

i can't condone buying a machine on a "what if" basis, though you could well be right eventually

look at it this way - there are so many great games available on the 360 today, the purchase is more or less justified, even if you need to buy a ps3 later

i'm pretty sure Knoxville respects my taste in games, so here's the rub: my 360 game library is larger than my dreamcast game library. and there's Rez HD in the new year...

I do see thats a bit of a major flaw with my post now you have pointed it out! Rez HD is going to be awesome, can't wait for that! It would be fantastic if chu chu rocket was resurected from the dead and brought back as well!

Re: Playstation 3 vs X-box 360 Elite - Sensible advice required within...

nothing against ps3's but u really have to look at the number of great games available and the 360 wins hands down on that front, catching for me, even the ps2

get a 360 and a when a ps3 becomes a worthwhile investment, and gets enough exclusive titles making it worth its price, it'll proberly be a lot cheaper

Knoxville, my recommendation would be the Xbox 360 Arcade system. It'll cost you only £180, comes with the 65nm parts, has a HDMI part, a memory card, wireless controller and 5 free arcade titles. In my opinion, it's the best value console available right now.

The hard drive on the Xbox 360 is only essential in my opinion if you plan on using Xbox Live. If so, you could think about getting one at a later date on ebay or something. Last but not least, a white Xbox console will match your Wii too.

Either way though, as the guys have pointed out above, both consoles have their merits and I'm sure you'll enjoy them both. If you do get an Xbox 360, I'd highly recommend Xbox Live. There are plenty of members on this forum who you'll be able to game with.
