Games for the holiday season

Now that my new PC is up and running, I need to buy some games to play on it. It's a Vista 64 system with 4GB RAM and a Q6600 CPU (not overclocked). I've also got a 8800GT card in there. Hence, it's a reasonable spec.

I've tried the demo of Crysis but thought it was rubbish! I'm after something with a bit of strategy. Games i've liked in the past include Act of War: Direct Action, Command and Conquer Generals and MS Flight Simulator.

Any recommendations for similar games that will run on Vista 64 and make use of DirectX 10?

Re: Games for the holiday season

Mmm same for me really, just got brand new PC, got a bunch of older titles that I've loaded onto the PC but I feel like I should be playing newer stuff.

I already have:

Wow
BF2 & Vietnam & 1942
HL2
Ghost Recon

I bought Crysis day my rig arrived, I cant really tell why I don't like it more, its ok, but I cant sit down and play it for 4 hours straight like I could say Call of Duty 1.

Orange box if you havent already got it. Fantastic deal and Im finding Portal seriously addictive. Not so sure about its dx10 credentials but apart from Crysis there arent many games that use dx10 a lot.

Re: Games for the holiday season

Orange box is the best thing ever. You might not like the shooters, but its worth it just for Portal And the shooters are there for you to try anyway I spose.

You could also get something likE Civilization 4 or Galactic Civilisations 2. And there are a fair few games like C&C Generals. There is the new C&C called Tiberium Wars, but I think I actually preferred Generals to that though..Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts might be a good choice. And Maybe an RPG like Oblvion/The Witcher/Neverwinter Nights 2/Two Worlds/ etc.

Re: Games for the holiday season

I've just ordered Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for £17 from Game - that was a pretty good price with free delivery.

I downloaded the demo first to make sure it worked on my Vista 64 system and it did. I found it more enjoyable than Company of Heroes. The free demo is just a single level but it does give you a good idea of the gameplay.

Re: Games for the holiday season

There is also an expansion pack out for it now as well which adds more units

From what i`ve seen the units range from single soldiers up to skyscraper sized robots and nuclear warheads

Yeh theres loads of units to play with Land, Air, Naval + lots of buildings.

Plus theres also 2 mods which are pretty decent 4th Dimension & Hawks mod are both good mods which add some units is well, Forged Alliance is the expansion pack and is a standalone game (So you dont need the old SupCom to play it) Look for that, it adds a few decent units.

Viva pinata is surprisingly good. But last time i was playing it what passes for a friend kept making Herion Hero "catch me" sounds.... I must admit it is slightly similar.

Yep, just ordered Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance from Amazon. Hopefully that'll arrive before Xmas as well. I'm assuming this is a full game although it was surprisingly well priced at £17.98 with free delivery.

For the same price you could of got Supreme-Commander Gold which includes both the original + the expansion forged Alliance.

But anyway sure you will enjoy - great game
