    Space simulators?

    Hey guys,

I'm not a massive gamer but since finally getting around to upgrading my computer so that I can actually run modern games I haven't seen or heard of any recent space sims... do these still exist? I loved the old wing commander and privateer games and whilst not as good I did enjoy freelancer.

Are there any games at all of this genre around now worth looking at?

    Thanks.

    Re: Space simulators?

There's X3, which looks great and will take advantage of a monster rig, but it's not hugely actiony. But it is sim-y, so might be up your alley.

I bought Darkstar One after trying the demo, but it was not very gripping, and I gave up on it after a couple of hours. There was another demo for one recently... the name escapes me. Sorry.

If you've never played Freespace 2, get that! GET IT NOW! Freespace 2 is the best space shootey game on the PC. I'm pretty sure there's an updated texture pack out and about, too. Freespace 2!

    Re: Space simulators?

I was thinking this the other day too. Freespace was awesome, as were the last two Wing Commander games, and the X-wing series. Freelancer is pretty good too, but they're all looking dated now.

Seems surprising no one has bothered to release something more recently, considering the massive leaps and bounds which have been made in hardware.

I loved I-War and I-War2 are also superb games but again dated in this category.

I still play Imperium Galactica 2 from time to time. A good space strategy game in my view.
Can anyone recommend any other games in this genre (I'm also a big Total war fan, surprise, surprise).

X3 is pretty good, EVE is ace on the MMO side of things if you fancy a long term commitment.

    Re: Space simulators?

I keep (foolishly) buying the X games. Every time I read about them I think they sound awesome.
Sadly they take bloody ages to get into... as much of a timesink as say World of Warcraft. The promise of the later game once you've got some cash together from fighting/trading sounds wonderful, but starting out is slow and painful, albeit pretty. Now I want to install X3 again...

If you just want something you can dip into, I think Darkstar One is a good bet. It's in a similar vein to Freelancer.

Alternatively you could play something like Space Rangers.

I used to play BattleCruiser 3000AD, havnt played any space sims since tho. Althought i think with the current graphics about today you could make a an amazing space fighter with stunning visuals.
Hell and Fire was spawned to be released.

    Re: Space simulators?

Spaceforce: Rogue Universe? Thats not bad, I bought it recently but I haven't played it much its looks pretty deep (not as deep as X). Its free roam, feels a bit like freelancer but the control system isn't quite as easy.

You might be able to pick up a copy of StarLancer cheap? Freelancer is sort of the sequel to that (sort of).

I had the opposite problem with X3, the main campaign was over and done with far too quickly for my liking. The only thing to do after that was to roam the universe amassing kills and cash - all great fun for a while but it gets boring without a plot or other human players to keep things entertaining. Having said that I never did finish the add on missions which required you to set up a working chain of stations...

    Re: Space simulators?

Freelancer is getting on in the years a bit now, but it's one of my favourite games.. Ever.
Played the campaign so many times, and the communities still pretty good I think.

I found X2 and X3 dull, hardly got out of the start of X2, it was dire.

Spent a while looking at Darkstar One before it came out, and it looked pretty good, believe it got decent reviews too, probably the most recent non-MMO space sim.

Eve is the other obvious space sim, which funnily enough today had the problem of deleting peoples Boot.INI files, if I picked up an MMO it would be EVE, but I doubt I ever will - my personality is too addictive =|

Tachyon : The Fringe is also a classic, with 2 different storylines and a good variety of missions, very old now though. Another of my favourites.
