Lightbulb Please recommend some cheap non-FPS lan games for four players!

As part of the Christmas fun and games I'm hooking up with 3 other gaming relatives and we're planning some LAN gaming.. but I'm struggling to think of some games we'd enjoy.

Shooters are out of the question, which to my limited imagination pretty much only leaves RTS games as a genre, plus the odd RPG.

Does anyone have any good suggestions?

So far we've pencilled in pretty much every game made by Blizzard. C&C might be a possibility but it's not hugely liked by some. SupCom is definitely out.

    Lowest hardware is a p4 3.06 and 6800GT.

    Thanks!

you already covered the main issue - RTSes

you can mix things up a little with variations on the theme - tower defense maps, for example, or an old rts called netstorm (NetStorm: HQ: News) which is ONLY tower defense (and offense, natch)

Re: Please recommend some cheap non-FPS lan games for four players!

Trying to think outside the box a little a very old game called Twisted Metal 2 used to be much fun to play. You're basicaly a car with weapons you pick up around the level (hominh missiles, bouncing bombs etc). You also have button combination moves, jump, freeze spells, mine dropping, fire bombs etc. the aim obviously being to chasing your opponents and destroy them. Used to be great fun if extremely dated. This was a PSone game! You can also blow up the Iffle tower

i believe it's available from the underdogs website as a free download:

Home of the Underdogs - Entry: Twisted Metal 2

See the where to get it : HERE bit, towards the bottom of the page.

You can also do co-op. You lot vs the AI cars...

    Edit:

If co-op FPS were an option, serious sam and serious sam the second encounter are really worth a blast. Fantastic frantic blasting as literally hundreds or crazy enemies come running towards you and you blast oversized cannon balls at them. Herds of stamppeding bulls, Duke Nukem style cheesy on-liners, and in the original game. Possibly the biggest boss in any game. Ever. Great great laughs have been had playing this cartoon blast em up and completely different to your standard FPS game.

    Edit 2:

    Cossacks (the original game)

Flawed RTs game, but falws make for some interesting games and swings in the battle, as any offensive character unit and take out instantly any uncharacter enemy unit if no enemy charactor units are nearby. What this basically means is one calavry unit can walk up and take over 100 cannons of the enemy in literally 5 seconds if the enemy doesn't have any soldiers guarding the cannons.

This makes for some highly frustrating (but also highly amusing...depending on your point of view) senarios where the tide of the battle can turn quite quickly. Good fun if you can be bothered to learn it's quirks. Some massive battles can be had involving 1000+ units each.

    Thanks - keep them coming

How do some of the strategy titles do multiplayer? I'm familiar with 1v1v1v1, 2v2, 4vAI etc. but do any of them have some more advanced co-operative modes?

We've all played BG2 to death.. and only have a few days in anycase I'd love us to try homeworld 2, but I fear it's not going to be quick enough to pick up for everyone to enjoy.

I remember Dungeon Keeper 2 was a great laugh when I was at uni. Freedom Force was a cheap and quick distraction as well. You could try NWN2 on co-op maybe?

Dungeon Keeper 2 is great fun, doesn't fun on a lot of new PCs though. Also multiplayer is buggy as anything on it!!

Homeworld 2 is fairly simple to pick up... movement is quite hard with it I find though. I've not played it much multiplayer but IIRC you can have 4v4 botmatch.

Empire Earth, Civ4 and AoW2 certainly have 4v4 bot match ability.

Re: Please recommend some cheap non-FPS lan games for four players!

    Playable with mouse+keyboard?

DK2 might be a good call. NWN2 was ruled out - we're all fairly involved in the NWN persistant world scene so I think a change was warranted (it starts to feel a bit like a job after too long!)

I'll try the GF on homeworld and see what she makes of it - I love the 3d-ness of it but I'm not sure she will.

If we can get an internet connection we might try one of the trials for a MMORPG - which ones are quite quick to get into? (scratch guild wars though)

Armagetron Advanced :: a Tron clone in 3D

One of the best games I`ve played at a lan. We had started out with CS:s, bf2 and the usual suspects but spend hours playing this game. Its like the tron bike race from the film but multiplayer and very fast. you can play online as well but any kind of lag is lethal

Re: Please recommend some cheap non-FPS lan games for four players!

Besides the countless RTS's and shooters, there should be a fair few RPG's you could play together too. Perhaps make your own NWN2 server or something like that.

I played quite a lot of RTS's in a 3 mates vs 3 computer AI's. That was quite fun. Most of the games I can think of though, are 1 on 1. Stuff like fighting games and racing games and stuff. Bomberman and stuff. Actually, I think bomberman might allow 2 vs 2, but its quite old now.

Atomic Bomberman is old but still works on XP and even Vista if you have the CD ( its in Soldout range )

That has loads of gameplay options, is face-paced and a proper arcade game with some hilarous sound effects. You can do spilt keyboard of TCP/IP and allow upto 8 players/bots in any combination IIRC.

1v1v1v1 / 2v2 / 4 v 4bots etc. Lots of gameplay options in the main menu 'options' too.

It's a great laugh, I still play it now and then when friends are over :-)

    Micro Machines?

Here's a list of recommended multiplayer games from the underdogs website. Some will be downloadable for free.

    Edit: here

Edit 2: This looks interesting here, might be too steep a learning curve for your needs though. Seriously recommend you browse through the list above.
