How do you complete a game?

I've been playing Super Mario Galaxy (this thread is spoiler free) the last few days and it got me thinking about another game in the past.... yes you guessed it, Burnout 3.

My brother would always rush to the newest areas when they became available. Where as I'd be sure to make sure everything was completed, with a gold medal in one place before moving on. I didn't like silver or bronze medals, they feel like failure to me when it comes to games. Yeah, my bro obviously progressed a hell of alot quicker, but I feel I got more enjoyment out of the whole thing.

Anyway, it was Mario Galaxy that got me thinking about this; Because I played it in the same way and by the end of the first day, I was far enough ahead of the star limits needed to open up galaxies that I was never in a position where I needed to chase stars to carry on. In the end I beat the final boss before actually doing the last mini one.

So I ask you, do you try to initially complete a game as fast as possible and then go back. Or are you more slow and steady?

Re: How do you complete a game?

I usually blast through games, get to the end and never touch them again. I think HL2 is the only game I've replayed in recent times.

I tend to get bored and move onto the next game. I'd say I only complete about 60% of the games I own.

Re: How do you complete a game?

i think the last game i actually "completed" was max payne 2...

i tend to go for games that have skirmish style modes, like supreme commander. or multiplayer. i may play through the single player briefly but it never holds my interest

the next game ill complete is ace combat 6, which im about 1 level away from after pulling an all nighter on saturday

Re: How do you complete a game?

typically, i'll do the main quest, obvious side-quests (but not scavenger hunts) on the first play through. if a game really kicks ass, i'll go back & complete the things like scavenging (e.g. hidden packages in gta)

of course, the 360 makes it easy - 1000 points == completed

Re: How do you complete a game?

I been doing the same on mario galaxy although i havent played it for a couple of weeks now. in fact havent played any games for a few weeks.

I try to play games thouroughly so I dont miss anything although I get to some games where I get bored quickly and never complete.

I still havent complete wind waker the GC even though I am at the last boss. Twighlight princess I`m far in but havent completed.

Re: How do you complete a game?

I prefer games you can't complete, like Test Drive Unlimited and The Elder Scrolls games.. but that could be just because I'm a cheapskate and want to keep playing a game endlessly

Re: How do you complete a game?

It depends on the game. If it's something I really like, I probably do about 90-100% of it. But usually I do the absolute minimum. STALKER I blasted through because I got seriously bored half way, Oblivion was the same. Most games I get bored of nowdays though, so I usually just blast through them to get to the end so I can move on. I minimise my boredom if I don't hang around too long, and sometimes I can enjoy a game like that, which I wouldn't enjoy otherwise.

Two Worlds for example, I just rushed through that game as quick as I could, and as I was starting to get fed up with it, I was nearing the end anyway.

Re: How do you complete a game?

I don't remember ever completing Mario64 back when it was released. I only ever played a world long enough to get to the next one.

I only play PC games now and find that they are a lot more linear (except RPGs) so I have no choice but to explore all areas, do all tasks etc. I never replay the same game twice.

Re: How do you complete a game?

I tend to try and complete whatever I can first time round. If I've missed stuff and I liked the game, I'll go back to it.

I've given up trying to buy the latest games and being good at it, I buy them when I feel like it and enjoy them.

Right now I'm going through NWN (yes still after all these years its been out, never bought it/played it till recently) and because I've been exposed to D&D type games before I'm trying to collect all the quests that are available, even though it is not in my character class. I know I've missed a few already and I'm on chapter 3 but hey, I'm human and miss things.

On racing games...NFS Underground is the last PC game I played and completed that once, got bored, never went back to it. GT4 on PS2 (well 3 now)...given up as the endurance races are a PITA (both A-Spec and B-Spec Mode).

RTS games...got about 4 missions into C&C3 and was totally and utterly bored by it. Graphically nice but not as fun as the old C&C games (Red Alert is still the best IMO).

Well that is my evening's rant over with...

Completing a game is like making love to a beautiful woman, you've got to go at it slowly and methodically and you must not stop until everything is complete

Re: How do you complete a game?

Depends how enjoyable I find the game.

I bought Bullet Witch at the beginning of the month for a tenner - played through the first level 10 or 20 times on various difficulty levels to earn points to level up all weapons and completed it on easy (you need to complete each difficulty level seperately to earn the achievements, so completing on hard the first time round won't unlock the normal and easy difficulty achievements) and now need to work through the normal, hard, chaos and hell difficulty levels (whoever thought up the 1 achievement point for completing on the hardest difficulty level must be insane). Despite the lack-lustre reviews, I've found it to be quite an enjoyable game, sort of like a unpolished Gears of War clone...

Problem is I bought Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Friday (before the half price offer expired), so I've started playing that leaving Bullet Witch to go back to later...

Which brings me to the point of my long winded ramble, I've enjoyed playing Bullet Witch and I have completed it (albeit on easy for now), but I don't consider it fully completed as I have other achievements which I could (and will) get at some point. However, I've stopped playing it because something else has come along (despite having already completed half of the game several times previously (also got LSW 2 and have played through that several times to get all the mini-kits, gold bricks etc...) and then something else might come along which will take me away from LSW and even further away from going back to Bullet Witch...

Oblivion I left for a good 6 or 7 months before finally going back to it and completing it (all 1000 achievements exactly a year from when I first started playing it).

I think I gave up on NWN single player at about chapter 3. I realised I had done a decent amount of side-quests and missed some key quests and couln't bring myself to hunt them down.

[Off Topic]
I remember playing on my mates machine online with his Ranger character...level 17 so not a weak character...totally wasted by what everyone else had out there!
[/Off topic]

I would have to agree with Blademrk it depends on how "fun" the game is. A friend and I played through N3 on Xbox360 and we basically done everythingbar one level that we couldn't get an A ranking on and the fun quickly wore off so we never went back to it. My mate traded the game in some time later. Was fun seeing who could do the largest hit combos though...

I suppose by far and away the best example I can think of in terms of how you complete a game is "Super Puzzle Fighter". Still play it today whenever I get the chance on my mates DS or Xbox360. Part enjoyment is completing the game in Arcade mode, but the other part is unlocking all the goodies. Sure they aren't anything special with exception to the new characters but if you're a real fan of the game, you tend to want to find all the unique outfits or logos etc.

Ahh Lego Star Wars...we tried to complete that game in our first run, trying to complete everything (in terms of xbox achievements and in game achievements). Nearly did it. Nearly did it...shame we started to run out of patience and wanted to continue on to complete it.
