    Portable Gaming

I haven't owned a handheld gaming device since the days of the original Gameboy and I never thought that I would need/want another one, however, lately I've found myself with quite some time spare but when not near my home PC. So, I've been wondering about getting myself something to pass this time.

I was under the impression that a PSP would be good, there's some good games for it and I've seen friends running emulators on theirs playing some old games and all sorts of others things like watching films and TV shows etc... Sounds pretty good. But then I've recently seen these adverts for those Brain Training games on the DS and that sounds like a good thing for me, I need a more active brain! Plus they have games on the DS like Zelda.

However, I also recently found out about a handheld device that's not very well known called the GP2X F200, it can run emulators, play games, show videos and play mp3's etc, and it's does look pretty good... but I don't know if it would be better for my needs than either the PSP or the DS.

So, what handheld gaming console have you got, which do you prefer and which would you advise?

I've got an old style Nintendo DS and the games on it are fantastic. In particular the self training games (brain training, sight, etc) are great along with Mario Kart which is addictive. The use of the stylus is just great and although I haven't used a PSP, I just find ths NDS is much better. You could also watch movies and listen to music with a special cartridge. Similar to what the GP2x.

Can't go wrong the NDS in my opinion.

    Re: Portable Gaming

I bought a PSP when it was first released over here and sold it earlier this year. There didnt seem to be any really great games out on it and the games that where out where usually really bad PS1 ports.

I have just got a NDS for christmas and love it ITs sleak(the new shape is anyway) And there seem to be loads of really good games on it.

    Re: Portable Gaming

The problem I see with the DS (for me anyway) is the lack of decent games. They mostly seem to be aimed at kids. I've never been a fan of the Mario games, there only seems to be one Zelda game but the Brain Training games do look pretty good. I see they have Warhammer out on the DS too.

However, for the PSP there seems to be a lot more games that I would enjoy, like Need For Speed, Grand Theft Auto, Warhammer, Syphon Filter, Final Fantasy etc... there seems to be a better choice. I think that may swing it for me!

    Re: Portable Gaming

One thing you definitely may want to do, is have a go at both. The one thing which really put me off the psp was the loading times. For portable gaming, loading times can seem like an eternity. I understand that the new psp slim and lite decreased loading times due to Sony increasing its cache size, however its still noticeable.

It might be worth having a play with the nds also, even though you mentioned the games were childish, those are normally the games I end up playing the most when on the move.

    Re: Portable Gaming

I would say both the psp and ds are good handheld gaming devices, both are unique and offer something different. The PSP has the ability to play movies, music, browse the internet etc. The DS on the other hand has some unique games plus a touch screen.

It really depends on what you enjoy, I recommend you try both and see what you prefer. I have a psp and I have never regretted buying it. It’s got some really good games (currently playing Syphon Filter: Logans Shadow- superb game), plus it can play movies which I find really useful, especially on long journeys.

    Re: Portable Gaming

I bought a psp when they were released in the UK.
Used it for a bit, but got quite bored of it. Also found the GTA games were a nightmare to control, it just cramped my hand up. Just got a DS...awesome. I already feel like i have used it more. As someone has said, the games which appear more 'childish' are actually the ones i find i play on the move. You can dip in and out of them easier.
DS would be a great buy.

    Re: Portable Gaming

Love my DS Lite, childish games FTW. Never liked the look of the PSP games, they're just console games but dumbed down even more for the handheld. I don't think I'd enjoy constantly thinking that the game would be much better on a console/PC. DS however has really unique games, might be worth checking out the castlevania games.

Oh yeah, DS + M3 Real = gaming awesomeness, instead of having to have every game cart carried around with you you can store every game on a micro SD card (because you don't download ROMs of games you don't own, that's illegal ). You can also play homebrew games, run SCUMMVM so you can run classic games like monkey island.

    Re: Portable Gaming

Another vote for DS - and with the combination of an external chip and mem card, you can play homebrew games, watch videos play music and use your ds as a pda.... (same as a PSP)

but it works out cheaper and for me I like carrying around a smaller unit..

Anyway to Allen, Final Fantasy is also on the DS.
    Woohoo now Assistant Manager!

    Re: Portable Gaming

Having both a DS and a PSP i can honestly say that the DS has FAR more original games on it that are actually worth playing. However if you wanted to play retro etc then a PSP is your best bet. Id go with the ds though.
