Gears Of War - PC Version Fixed?

    Hi All,

I've read quite alot about Gears Of War for the PC having loads if issues on release. Installation crashes, freezing for a second every few in game etc.

I was wondering if Microsoft has fixed the issues with the most recent patch before fighting throuigh the sales crowds to pick up a copy to find out its still knackered.

Anyone know if its been fixed?

    Cheers

Re: Gears Of War - PC Version Fixed?

Mine doesn't crash any more but I do find that Marcus seems to stutter when running around even though the rest of the game is playing really well. It's not too noticeable though and shouldn't put you off buying the game!

Re: Gears Of War - PC Version Fixed?

Thanx for that. Your spec is a fair bit higher than mine, so I might hold off a bit. Mind you, its only £20 in the sales atm so maybe I shoul dget it now and wait a bit for any more patches to play it.

Anyone else got any experiences of this they can share?

After the patch and the latest official drivers from nVidia the game runs very smooth now.

Stuttering seems to have stopped and it runs on high textures even with the 320mb version of the 8800gts.....although I'm only playing at 1280x1024 res (native).

Thanx for that Tony. I'll get myself a copy then. On 1920 * 1200 with sli 7800gtx's so may not get full graphics settings, but if the crashes have stopped gotta be worth 20 squid.

Re: Gears Of War - PC Version Fixed?

Well, I played it through to completion before the patch and bar one annoying problem where saved games would disappear (A GFWL problem, fixed i think now), I had no technical issues - except the fact that the Vsync option in the game didnt work, and the profile in the Nvidia driver didnt seem to be linked to the correct exe. If you find this is the case for you, then create a new addition and manually select the exe - worked fine for me and then you can see what truly is a beautiful game.

Have a look at my rig - I was running in 1920x1200 fully maxed and seemed ok, but the 8800 might have helped a bit. I did find, just for testing, that it looked really good at 1680x1050 too - not quite sure how well it runs in SLI though.

Defintely pick it up though mate - it was a fantastic, cheesy, often funny, very gorgeous, action packed game. If it was a film, then it would be... Armageddon

Have fun - any probs or questions then let us know and we'll do what we can to help.

    JP

Re: Gears Of War - PC Version Fixed?

Well I picked it up the other night and apart from a horrific install time (over an hour by the time you've had to do all the MIscrosoft Live amalrky) it went smoothly. Had to install an AMD patch regards dual core cpu's as well, but not a problem.

I've had to drop to medium settings at 1920x1200 or I can switch up some settings and play at 1600x1200. tbh the medium settings still look pretty bloody good, so I've gone with that.

Game plays very smoothly, and none of the stuttering Marcus syndrom that some people have mentioned.

All in all worth the £20 i'd say.

    Cheers eveyone for your help.

Re: Gears Of War - PC Version Fixed?

Yeah - should have mentioned about the install times, just so that you didnt think that the dame thing was broken... I know that I thought something was up! Glad you enjoyed it... and yes, medium looks absolutely fabulous too, the textures are so detailed that it puts all most other games (Crysis included IMO) to shame (Texture wise that is...)

    Happy gaming

I got this when I played last night, don't worry though, it seems the bug is only caused when you play via Autorun.

Try running the game from the start menu shortcut (or direct from the game dir. if you're not using start menu shortcuts) and it should be all well.

    Also anyone who comes accross this should make sure to make the registry edit, detailed here;

Why didn't they just include that in the patch?
Starting it from the game directory didn't work either.

That's pretty much the tone of the epic page thread on the Epic forums, it's seems pretty shoddy of them.

Hopefully they'll chuck a proper patch out that remedy this too :/
