    Smile Baffled ?. :(

    Hello All,

I would be most interested if anyone in the Games forum could explain the following.

Quite a while back I purchased a reissue of the game broken Sword,
    The Smoking Mirror. From Dixons.

This was installed on a previous system, I played the game upto part of Disk 2, then for some reason I did not complete it, but loaned it out to my Daughter.

Recently I thought I would replay it on my present system.
Install went fine no probs. but as soon as I click on start game, the screen goes black and displays a photo type image in the centre of a human eyelid ???.

Then my system siezes up solid, I then have to revert to ctrl, alt, delete.
    Or a hard restart.

At first I thought maybe this was possibly due to one of my Grandkids downloading all sorts of rubbish as they do, "Little ********", Lol.
On there own Computer, certainly not mine, "No Way".
Then I thought, if its a Cd. Rom then surely nothing can be written to it, as I have always assumed that these are not rewritable ?.

I cannot think that this is a virus related problem as I always use Avg, and Zonealarm.

I would appreciate an explanation to this problem, the cost of a replacement is not an issue, its the mystery that puzzles me.

Incidentaly, my setup is working fine, no probs. at this moment in time.

    Thanks.
    Harry

Success, can be the result of many Failures,
and believe me, I should know I have enough.

Hi HarryOatcake, when my pc starts to act up like that i re-install drivers to see if that might be causing the problem, and by the sound's of it your pc video drivers may be messed up..

    First go into safemode
(Turn PC on, Keep finger on F8 and wait for menu to come up pick safemode)

Remove the old ATI control panel and ATI display drivers from add\remove panel in control panel.

Then run Drivercleaner to clean out the old drivers
    http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/

    restart in normal windows
Press cancel when windows informs you it has found a video controller
(You will have to do this twice)
And now's a good time to install the latest drivers for your video card
    http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

if this does not help try installing new (or existing) drivers for your motherboard and sound card as well.

Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that you played it on a previous system, maybe something on your new pc hardware wise is causing the problem.

I wouldnt be surprised to find it is incompatible with your 9600 pro!
in that sort of instance there isnt much you can do, try updating the drivers as i have already posted perhaps that may allow the game to start workign without crashing.

Also you could try radlinker, it allows you to make a profile each game you play, perhaps broken sword the smoking mirror needs all eye candy turned off i.e. anistrophic filtering and antaliasing.

Try this program and see if it helps.

Also did your old pc have 95,98 or ME on it? as i see you use XP if so that could be the problem.

Go into where you installed the game
find the file that starts the game
and press the RMB on it, press properties then compatibility
There wil be a box thats says "run this program in compatibility mode"
tick the box and pick windows 95 or 98
    see if it works now.
