Best game that should of been but never was..

in your opinion, what game had it all, but didnt quite have that little bit extra that would of made it truly epic.

For me, its got to be Operation Flashpoint. HUGE islands, HUGE amount of weapns and customisation. full on battlefields. the game was unfortunatly littered with bugs and the online was truly dire most of the time. the videos using the in game engine were great too, as was the mission editor. the little things let it down, like if you lost your car/bike you'd have to trek for hours to get to where you were after. hope ofp2 is better, but the first was a system hog to say the least, so number 2 will be :O

Re: Best game that should of been but never was..

Stalker was oh so nearly astounding.....it felt 6 months to early....so much was missing that had been showcased in preview movies

On an old school note, Giant's Citizen Kabuto SHOULD have done much better sales wise than it did - was a great game

Unreal Tournament 3 was a let down too - where the hell are the new weapons? why is half the good features gone and rubbish inserted instead (eg gamespy), and weapon/vehicle balance just broken? It feels like a beta.

STALKER. Should have used its engine to a better advantage. Like you should have been able to do whatever you want, and whether you have input or not "reds" are still going to attack "blues". Just seemed like everyone waited around for you.

Re: Best game that should of been but never was..

    Two games this year really.

ET: Quakewars. Playing in the beta back in July it looked to me like it would be an amazing game on release and I thought the clan following would be huge. Yet after it was released it lacked something for alot of people and I stopped playing it after a couple of weeks. Perhaps it was ovecomplicated, the maps hard to learn and maybe the weapons were too balanced.

Unreal Tournament 3. When we were still playing UT2K4 clan matches we were drooling over screenshots of the next UT game and I always had high hopes indeed for it. Howver having eagerly awaited my preordered copy, I've hardly played it at all. The apparent lack of servers with players on surprises me and just the lack of enthusiasm for this game. Maybe again the weapons and vehicles are too balanced, nothing feels like its right. The maps to me feel small and cramped. I dont even know whats wrong with UT3 or perhaps what isn't right enough. I loved UT2K4 when it cam out, spent hours and hours just playing the demo on torlan and yet UT3 isn't grabbing me by the balls in the same way. Shame.
    My blog

    I used to play BF3, Battlefield BC2, BF4 and TF2

    Do something amazing.... Give blood

The ones that spring to mind recently are Assassins Creed, Halo 3 and Chronicles of Riddick.

Re: Best game that should of been but never was..

BF2 tbh. On release it was very good with just a few little bugs to be ironed out. Instead they listened to the whiners and messed around with the balance over successive patches until nobody was truly happy while not actually fixing the bugs.

It never was what i was actually hoping for though.
I had been hoping for Desert Combat with better graphics and a few new cool features. I was very disappointed when it actually came out.
The random deviation of the bullets was pooh.

Some worth candidates, i'd definitely backup Russ tho. The game was just crying out for some quality control before release.

Re: Best game that should of been but never was..

i always liked the sound of bet on soldier in its early preview stages but it never came close to being a big hit
Deaus EX 2 - was a decent game but could have been a bigger and suffered being compared to the original
Daikitana?? however its spelt people though this was going to be huge! and it was pants

I think assasins creed is pretty good it got a hell of a lot of hype and it does have a few niggles but its sold boat loads and has loads of fans - it could be better but u can say that about everything

    Permanently confused

Yeah, Assassins Creeds the 'future/back to the past' story was horrible, and was marred an otherwise great game.

Re: Best game that should of been but never was..

Quake Wars could have been ace. Instead, you had to read more crap on screen in seconds than I would voluntarily read in a week when I'm meant to be relaxing (i.e. gaming). I did like the graphics though.

Shogo MAD IS an epic game, IMHO. Going a bit old skool, but it could have been so huge. Sadly, it had to compete with Half Life when it was released, and it just flopped. I still love it though.

I've not really got into Stalker yet. It has yet to "grab" me. What were the features they left out?

WTF was that all about? "It's going to be great", "It's going to be great", "It's going to be... oh... it's sh1t."
