Direct2Drive - Digital downloads? Anyone used it?

    Evening all,

Has anyone heard of Direct2Drive digital media downloads? I was hoping to pick up CoD4 this weekend, but after a quick online search it seems to be available on this website (seems to be affiliated with the likes of Fileplanet etc) for $49.95 (much cheaper than anywhere else that sells it)

Anyone any idea if its worth putting £25 forward for?

    Cheers,

All i know is they use different patches, and i think there's some online/multiplayer issues that some people have had.

I'd just get the DVD version. It's worth the extra £10 just for the headache relief.

oh; and gutted at EA, i used their system to download the BF2 expansion, paid for them, and then PayPal refused to pay it after i downloaded the game, so i got them free. In their FACE!

Re: Direct2Drive - Digital downloads? Anyone used it?

I've heard of it - but never used it.

I really hate the whole digital download thing, I can see the benefits in terms of getting things faster and possibly cheaper because of the lack of media..but I really prefer a physical box with a CD/DVD and printed manual.

Why? well aside from being old fashioned, it doesnt tend to be that much cheaper if you shop around, I never feel like i'm getting value for money, it ties up your net connection while you download it in the first place, lots of the time the game requires separate patches or won't work with popular modifications..that and the fact that i've still yet to see a digital delivery program that works really well.

The three big ones I am aware of are Steam, EA's effort and Direct2Drive - and all are shocking. Steam is *still* buggy, still has issues with paying for games, and still doesnt have a reliable interface for downloading files with a "time remaining" counter thats anywhere near accurate. EA's is just nasty to use and is even more buggy than steam..and the Direct2Drive system is the one that causes problems with customisation/patches.

Mini rant over lol, sort story is that I prefer boxed versions

You can get it from CDWOW for £26.99 anyway which is about the same price:

CD WOW! - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (DVD-ROM) - Windows

Re: Direct2Drive - Digital downloads? Anyone used it?

I think the only real benifit would be if places like Amazon used a D2D system so that you could buy a game and play it straight away while they send you the boxed version, other than that.... What he said
