    System Shock 2

I have found great sadness this weekend...

In a fit of nostalgia I reinstalled SS2 on my machine only to find that no matter what combination of official and unofficial hacks and patches I used I couldn't prevent it from crashing out as soon as it got to the menu.

    Great sadness...

    Re: System Shock 2

I've got the latest one, or possibly the last one before that...

What really bugs me is that it used to play okay for me under XP. I read that it doesn't like running on multi core systems very much so it may be my CPU.

Look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?

Currently got that one installed! There are some great texture mods available for it now. Mind you the updated zombie nurse things don't look that great I personally feel but the other mods I have installed are pretty decent.

    Re: System Shock 2

i remember playing this at a friends house in secondary school before i even had my own PC - absolutely classic game!
i cant remember vast details of it but i do remember the part where you are walking around and suddenly the room starts to pixelate and morph into a kind of holodeck where you are suddenly in a room with the CPU talking to you - that was kinda scary but a very cool idea

Absolute classic! tried the multiplayer? its hilarious... I've tried it with 3 players and we just ran around lynching zombies with the wrench. You can't kill each other with the wrench as well, only the other weapons.

I wonder if anyone has tried it on an Eee?

    Re: System Shock 2

I had major hassles getting it running too, you might try running the game, ctrl+alt+del out of it, and right click the sshock2.exe and setting the affinity to 1 for the processor.

Did me no use though. It ran better in Vista, but still crashed when I tried to do anything.

I'm building a NAS machine at present. Befiore I start using it, I'm gonna install Win98SE on it just for SS2!

Simpler way why don't you download Virtual PC from Microsoft's website (Free) or VMWare (also free) install XP as a Virtual OS, install SS2 and run it that way. Best thing is that you don't have to mess around with dual booting or install Linux and Wine etc. You can then start the Virtual OS just like you would an application.

shame SS2 doesn't run very well on an emulated s3 trio graphics card

Is this a problem with Win XP or the graphic drivers.

    Re: System Shock 2

    Hi
I actually have this running under Vista 64Bit edition, Microsoft have realy worked hard to ensure 32Bit and "Old Windows" compatibility.
This ran for me without any patches at all.
However there is a Windows XP/2000/NT et al patch available.
