    Re: Phil Harrison joins Infogrames

    Hehe easy mistake to make.

The one that usually gets people is that Atari isn't Atari Which sounds silly until you give them their full names and mention that Atari Inc (US) is a separate company from Atari Europe SASU (EU), and that the latter are a fully owned subsidiary of (ie, the same as) Infogrames who happen to hold a controlling stake in the former

In what way? The recent AAA games (Test Drive Unlimted, The Witcher) have been great. Alone in the Dark looks quite nice too.

The games are nothing to do with Atari (outside development). Atari launch and support in Europe is notoriously bad. Infograme's was always crap.

Test Drive Unlimited and Alone in the Dark are 100% internal projects actually. The Witcher wasn't, but it was a closer than normal relationship.

What facts do you have for your accusation of bad support? I've heard the same before but every case I've looked into over at the Atari boards has turned out to be a false accusation. That surprised me - I thought that there might be 1% or so that had bad support, but actually not a single claim of bad support was substantiated.

Launch.. I don't know how to judge that - sales have been good for PC games, so what other measure do you go by to say launches are bad?

    Re: Phil Harrison joins Infogrames

I heard rumours about this as soon as he left Sony.

Seemed a gbit of a strange move considering the PS3 is finally starting to gather steam especially seeing as Atari havent been in the best of states for a while.

Might bet that he wants a new challenge or knows something sony are doing..

    Re: Phil Harrison joins Infogrames

Test Drive Unlimited is Eden Studios I thought. Maybe Atari bought them. It's good at that. I can't remember all the botches that Atari have done, just that when I see the name I usually groan. They certainly have mishandled D&D Online, which garnered far less users in Europe than the US. I think ToEE was theirs too, which came out in alpha form.

And The Witcher is a fine example of an Atari botchtup. In the latest re-runs they have dispose of the printed manual. Unfortunately they didn't think to put the registration key anywhere else.

*nods* Eden Games (not Studios, that's a different company) are Infogrames/Atari's development branch (since 2002).

I can't remember all the botches that Atari have done, just that when I see the name I usually groan. They certainly have mishandled D&D Online, which garnered far less users in Europe than the US. I think ToEE was theirs too, which came out in alpha form.
ToEE was botched, but if you're trying to place the praise for good games on developers outside of Atari then I'd try and place the blame for that bad game on Troika, who definitely aren't part of Atari (Besides, I don't know which Atari had responsibility for that - US or EU.)

I don't know much about DDO as far as Atari go (it seems to be owned by Codemasters now) - but it's tremendously popular with all my D&D friends. But I think that's it - it's a bit of a D&D players game which is far more popular in the US than EU.

And The Witcher is a fine example of an Atari botchtup. In the latest re-runs they have dispose of the printed manual. Unfortunately they didn't think to put the registration key anywhere else.
That would be a class cock-up if true

Actually, after it was properly patched it was a pretty good game. Not earth shattering, but not POR2 (POS2?) by any means. I liked it a lot, as it's the closest ever game to PnP IMO. It just got kicked out of the door way too early. And that's usually down to the publisher.

It's true. To get a number I had to first complain to CD Projekt RED, who then told me what the problem was. I then had to send a message on the Atari site, wait for their response and then send them the barcode number on the box. Bit of a shag around as I couldn't access the sites at work, so every step took a day.

Why didn't you just take it back to the shop and demand a proper one? It's not unknown for shops to take the manuals out of cases.

    Re: Phil Harrison joins Infogrames

They all went out like that according to the man from CDPR. Anyway I bought it online (who pays shop prices?) and I was only in the UK for a week.

I assume you know why I didn't want the US version. Besides it's actually cheaper in the UK!
