Question What makes a great game ?

Everyone will have different opinions on this but there are so many great games out there! Many will have passed us by being overshadowed by bigger titles with better advertising campaigns.

Reason I am saying this is that I'm off work with a severe back injury at the min so I'm revisiting a lot of my older games and catching up on some newer ones whilst I have nothing better to do and getting bored sitting home alone

I have just ordered a few old games direct from Mastertronic in their Sold Out range. Should be getting delivered within the next day or so, Project Eden, Anachronox and also Prisoner of War for the PC. I have played all of these to completion in the past and passed them onto friends (Doh). However looking forward to getting back into them again. Hoping that Project Eden will run under Vista x64 though as it was a nightmare to run under XP when released, remember having to tinker with sound settings to get it running smooth!

A few days ago I bought Beyond Good & Evil for a mere fiver from the local store, forgot how great and fun this game actually is. Origionally played it on the PS2 when it was released but the past 2 days have been great. Photographing the animals, nicking the pearls from under the Alpha Sections noses and creating a Revolution to free the land. All in all the game isn't overly taxing but what a ride it is with some great set pieces, puzzles and the storytelling is superb.

Granted it is only around 10 hours play start to finish but what a game. It draws you in right from the off with the attack on the lighthouse and just doesn't let go! For me this game is almost perfect, it has all the right ingredients. Animation, story, puzzles and the list goes on, it has something for everyone.

Do yourself a favour (Dont plug into a Sega) and get Beyond Good & Evil!

What else can everyone else recommend as one of those titles that passes by, has to be hundreds out there!?

Re: What makes a game ?

I still love Beyond Good and Evil - one of the finest examples of a game I can think of. I still laugh out loud just remembering the reactions of alpha section when you hit the pack on their backs

Make the planned two sequels to it please!!!! (Was originally part of a trilogy, but didn't sell so they turned it into Prince of Persia instead, which did rather better).

Lots of people put Planscape:Torment into the 'passed by' category, but in reality it did quite well.

PuzzleQuest is new oldschool but totally addictive.

I'm right into Fallout 2 at the moment, never got to play it when first released (too many fps), so i'm finally going through it and loving it. Have still got beyond good an evil for ps2 but never completed it, good game though same as kingdom hearts.

When it comes to obscure I can think of nothing more satisfying then the old LucasArts adventure collection.

    Monkey Island 1-4
    Indiana Jones
    Day of the Tenticle

.... ahhhh, they don't make em' like that any more.

Re: What makes a game ?

I have Indy and the Infernal Machine but the installer won't allow it at all to be setup, incompatible with x64 Vista. Grim Fandango is superb, played through it recently, also have Discworld Noir and Broken Sword Sleeping Dragon sitting there to be played!

My 3 games arrived this morning, Project Eden looks a bit bland with the textures but it is really good and works fine, done the first level so far and it has me gripped. Just installed Prisoner Of War and will be playing that in a little while.

Looks like I am set for a few weeks off work now!

Re: What makes a game ?

I envy those people that can go back and play some of the old classics. Personally I just can't do it nowadays. I don't know whether its because I've been spoilt by today's incredible graphics or just a lack of imagination as I get older or a combination of the two, but some of the games mentioned here I remember playing when they were brand new and thought they were great except now I can't look past the blocky exterior to the underlying gameplay. There's something about moving a 2D character across a blocky bitmap that just kills the immersion for me, which is a damn shame

Re: What makes a game ?

cod4 makes a game. I just love the storyline and how the npcs play along and help you. usually you're always on your own. other games like the thief series do it for me too. nothing like sitting in the dark at night playing thief with the surround on listening for lurking guards. if you want a long game to play try some of the Zelda series never gets old.

    3D Game Animtion

I heard of 3D Studio Max and Maya. I'm wondering which one of them is better and I would like to create a 3D game. But I don’t know from where to start. Can any one answer me?

Re: What makes a great game ?

for me games like final fantasy 7 were great. before that sim city (on a single floppy disc)

i think for me it has to be good storyline and longevity.Nothing worse than payng £40 for a game and finding that you complete it in 6 hours, i think thats why i like rpgs likefinal fantasy and fable just because you get more for your money.

Re: What makes a game ?

Grim Fandango was an amazing game, never got to complete it though as my original disk just screwed up and would freeze and stutter.

    Sad day :-(

As for one of the greatest games ever created it has to be Final Fantasy 7, it has an amazing story line, great cut scenes and lots of game play.

Re: What makes a great game ?

Played FF7 when it came out, and replayed it a few times since then. Tried to go back and play it a few months ago and couldn't do it. It just doesn't stand up against todays games, good when it was released though.

For me, Warcraft III is great - the vast amount of originality and creativity that's went into some of the online maps is incredible. There's a large reservoir of gameplay ideas here that could be made into stand online games if padded out a bit (DoTA, tower defence, hero defence etc etc etc).
