    Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I know, I know, this game's 'old' now but whatever, I just got it for the xbox 360

I'm wondering, is this game meant to be really difficult or have I messed something up?

My first proper mission was to close the first oblivion gate and my god, once I got inside the tower it was so difficult. I can just about deal with one of those goblin like things that shoulder barge and scratch you (cant remember their names), but if there is two of them, im basically doomed (especially when they cast that violet/purple spell on themselves).

As you can tell by my use of colours to describe a spell, Im quite new to this type of game, but I really wasn't expecting this?

I'm the reptile type thing playing as a bard (currently wearing heavy armour).

Is it just me? Should I start again?

    Cheers!

    Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

What does your character specialize in?
If your strong with heavy armour then thats fine just check it doesnt need repairing
Shields are a good way of staying alive
The enemy arent very intellignet in Oblivion just run backwards while blocking and some opening should appear. Use magic or a bow to get some hits from long range.
Play to your characters strengths and you should be fine

    Permanently confused

    Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I found that the first time played through it I had a similar problem, but then I realised I had it on the hardest difficulty This was on the PC game so not sure it'll be the same, but there should be a slider in the options somewhere to adjust the difficulty.

    Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

    Knock back the difficulty slider?

IIRC, you deal 1/6 damage at the hardest, 6x damage at the easiest.

Otherwise it depends on your character class.
    [bard]
    Specialization:Stealth
    Attributes:Intelligence,Personality
    Skills:
    Alchemy
    Blade
    Block
    Illusion
    Light Armor
    Mercantile
    Speechcraft

Ok, from the looks of that, if you want fast cash, harvest everything you can, make potions and then flog them in the stores in the imperial city. Obviously with blade and block, you'll be best with a sword although you'll probably be better off with light armour for a while - as your heavy armour will have some serious penalties until you level it up. You could try magicka, although you'll get drawbacks like reduced effectiveness, etc. Also you've got block as a major skill, so use that to your advantage. It may not help so much against magic, but you'll be good enough to stop serious damage being dealt by weapons for the time being.

Other things you might want to do are do a couple of dungeons first, to get some loot to sell (or use for yourself), do a few side quests to get some of your skills up and so on.

UESP is very much your friend! Oblivion:Character Creation - UESPWiki might help too.

    Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

If you're using a Bard, you're gonna want to use Light Armour, such as Leather. From there, it'll be worth trying to either get into the Fighters or Mages guild to earn some money.

    Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

the game isnt difficult matey, one of the best titles i'vew bought on my PS3 too.
just play it by preferance (sp)

if you want to be an assassin type char then pick a race accustomed to it (this is my persoanl fave) i picked a wood elf who specialises in most of the required fields, use light armour, use sneak when possible and try using your bow most of the times, decent back up blade for ammo issuses (search the name 'Umbra' for one of the best blades obtainable at any lvl)

warrior, melee type char - use heavy armour and a variety of melee weapons (fists, mace, sword ect)

and for a caster - just wear a robe and a hood - the lighter armour, the more effective your spells are (unless you chose battle mage who wears armour)

to be honest, a trade char such as a bard are not that useful - once you get a few levels then money isnt a problem and speach craft can be leveled by someone not specialising in it quite easily. i have made 4 chars now and finished the game on each (to get which class i prefer ready for the expansion) and when i start the game EVERY TIME i escape the dungeon, i go to the imperial city arena and get to the top - that gets you a few levels AND a fair bit of starting cash.

any other advice you need pal gimme a shout

    wowch cheers : D

The various things I've beaten up since the first gate haven't been a problem at all actually but I'm still tempted to start again (especially as every guard I meet thinks I stole my horse! seriously, Brother Martin saw me get on it and ran after me!). I'll give it another hour... or two.

Oblivion is the most fun i've had on a game in ages. Its 'oldness' doesn't matter at all. Its a really, really great game.

    Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

also if money is an issue and you decide to make an assassin - join the thieves guild, wait til late at night and unlock all the rich houses and shops - rob them blind and sll the goods to a fence

oooh!! and a huge forget me not - soon as you get a few levels do ALL of the Daedric quests for the games BEST items for all classes. armours, weapons, trinkets, novelty staves - and when you do them all you get a small quest which is given during the night which gives you a book giving your stats a MAJOR BOOST!

Unfortunatel the Oblivion levelling system can cripple your character if you don't make the right choices at creation time - read the articles in the wiki on this to see just how silly it is...
