As we know the new Battlefield is to be free and supported by ads.
This is a very emotive subject and people have some very strong opinions about it.
Personally I'm in favour but I wondered what the overall opinion is.
Why do people object to ads ingame anyway?
What difference does it make?
If your character is walking down a street and passes a burger bar how is it inferior if it is a McDonalds as opposed to a funny made up name?
They had a Burger King blimp in GTA:Vice City and I honestly don't think it took anything away from the gameplay.
It costs such a lot to develop a top game these days that they need to have an alternative income stream if games are to remain affordable.
PC games usually come in at about £30 and consoles about 50% more.
This is the same price that they were charging about 15 years ago. Why? Because the punters (us) won't pay more.
So, isn't it nice that wages and the cost of living haven't gone up in all that time?
Oh, wait, thay have. A lot.
So how do they develop top games on a rapidly diminishing budget?
Obviously I'm not talking about interrupting the game for an advert break but product placement and ingame scenery being real life items paid for by the manufacturers would INCREASE the immersiveness of the game as far as I can see.
