    Mass Effect (for PC)

So, I think it's due for release soon and really debating to buy this game.

My mate has it for xbox360 and it looks good, story seems pretty neat but what appeals to me is the fact you can almost seem to do what you want. It's like an RTS/FPS/RPG all in one.

I just don't fancy sinking £35 for a game...I am a git when it comes to buying games, I wait till they are on white label but for mass effect....really tempted to jump in feet first.

Judging by the graphics, I doubt my current PC spec will run it how I want it to look.

Anyhow, debating on if I should get it when it's released...sooo tempting...need to replace the 8600GT with an 8800GTS (or two) lol.

    Re: Mass Effect (for PC)

I was looking forward to getting this for over summer after my exams, I was totally sucked into the hype before it was released. From reviews of the console versions the game seems to be pretty lengthy and of high quality, so I reckon it's probably worth the thirty five quid, if you enjoy the idea of rpg-ish combat.

HOWEVER I have a suspicion it'll stay faithful to the tradition of 360 ports and end up being buggy as hell

The game sounds good and sounds like it has a good story, however I like 1st person shooters and 3rd person just does not feel right. Could spoil it tbh.

    Re: Mass Effect (for PC)

It should run fine - it's based on the Unreal 3 engine which is pretty efficient and runs great even on relatively low hardware.

But I probably won't be getting it, because it's not a do anything you want type game at all. Bioware are masters at telling a story, and Mass Effect takes this even further than their previous games - so it's one central story, and lots of very minor side quests. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's just a bit too Bioware for me - lengthy dialogues/story exposition in relatively boring environments. The Witcher has spoiled me in terms of choices having an effect, and the Elder Scrolls have spoiled me in terms of doing what I want.

Now Dragon Age I am really looking forward to.

I'm going to wait for the PCZone review... PC reviews generally differ from console ones, but to say I'm not hoping this is going to be awsome would be a lie!

That doesn't appear to be the case with this version; combat, squad command and driving mechanics have been given a well needed overhall. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the game (360) wasn't without it's quirks but most appear to be addressed (and hopefully improved) in the PC version. The most annoying problem, apart from those I've already mentioned, is the fact that the mining/stations you visit are practically identical - I knew what to expect when starting those mini/sub-missions. It felt like too much rinse and repeat for my liking.

Although I won't be buying the PC version, having already played through the original, I do hope it sells well enough to allow for the follow ups to be made (it's aready been announced as a trilogy).
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

I think it depends on the game TBH, finally got round to playing "The Witcher", and was pleasently surprised to discover that the combat system, whilst 3rd person was actually quite good.

    Re: Mass Effect (for PC)

Oh someone had to mention Elder Scrolls...I want to get Oblivion too. And the Witcher.

I don't like the fact that there is an element of rinse and repeat in Mass Effect. I'm one of those people who will try to do 100% of a game, so repeatability of the mining/stations might put me off trying to do that.

But my mate always harped on about how good the story is. We have similar tastes as he introduced me to Baldur's Gate (and all that followed suit in RPG).

I'm not sure I agree. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Bioware fan and stuff they do for their community is second to none, but I find their games all rather samey and other people tend to do a better job with the same engines.

    IMHO:
The Baldur's Gate series is still their best, but even then many people think Planescape:Torment to be the best infinity engine game.

NWN's single player campaign was pretty rubbish - the genius with this game was the toolset/multiplayer and even then it took a usage outside of Bioware's initial design to create the best elements in other people's hands. Excellent support post release for the work other people were doing though.

KOTOR had a fantastic linear story with a good/evil scale, lots of dialogue, but a pretty boring environment and a feeling you were just playing from point to point along a fixed script. Again the engine turns up elsewhere in a better game (The Witcher).

Jade Empire... I've not even bought this, due to feelings it's yet another linear story with a good/evil scale, lots of dialogue but pretty boring environment type game.

Mass Effect.. from what I can tell, yet another good, linear story with a good/evil scale, lots of dialogue and pretty boring environments.. and it's not even Bioware's own engine this time.

I guess I'm just fed up of feeling like I'm just playing along a Bioware blueprint-story game - I can see why other people still enjoy them, and how with the polish they also get safe reviews. But they're just to formulaic for me.

I'm really looking forward to Dragon Age though.

You are so right, it was very dissapointing. I'd rather have less planets to visit, with a larger population.

The game was very cinematic, with great voice acting though.

    Re: Mass Effect (for PC)

well - it's a bioware game so I will buy it, play it and enjoy it (i have no doubt). I agree with kalniel though - there games have slowly lost something over time as they moved into 3D. the dialogue and story telling is what brings me back all the time, but I enjoyed the sense in the past that the dungeons and enviroments where not completely linear and felt more like the good old days of DnD modules in pen and paper RPG's.

That said, you can see the same thing in 3d shooters as well. Remember the days of Doom and Doom 2 - where you could go left OR right at a T-junction and you could skip some rooms etc. Gears of Wars (for example) was a great game and I enjoyed it, but you are just walking down a long straight path basically.....
