    Playstation 3 Cables.....

Hello, I have just bought a Playstation 3 as it was really cheap (£165 with receipt + 2 games), and have a dilema as to what connections to use.

I have a Dell 2005FPW Widescreen 20" LCD Monitor, I know it is very old but for me it still has a very decent picture.

The connections it has are, VGA, DVI, Composite and S-Video.

I am using DVI already as it is connected up to my PC, and the S-Video is connected up to my freeview box.

So I have composite and VGA left. I have connected the PS3 upto via the composite cable (yellow) and I have to say that the picture is shocking as I would have expected.

Still, I think that there is something wrong with the settings, I have played around with them but the picture via the Composite is still shocking, is there a special setting I need to change as my monitor is a TFT PC one rather than a television?

What cables can I use to connect it up with?

I know nothing about PS3's as it was an impulse buy so any help would be much appreciated.

    Re: Playstation 3 Cables.....

PS3 uses HDCP and your monitor has no component, so your kinda stuck. Does you monitor support HDCP via DVI

no, the 2007 is needed for HDCP

the 2005 is generally unsupported in HD mode

    Re: Playstation 3 Cables.....

This could be a very good reason to buy a new monitor ..OR..there is this option that you might want to look into.

Amazon.co.uk: HDfury 1080P HDMI to VGA Converter Transcoder: Electronics & Photo

Review: HDfury DVI/HDMI to RGB Converter - DCEmu Forums:: The Homebrew & Gaming Network :: PSP Dreamcast Nintendo DS Wii GP2X Xbox 360 GBA Gamecube PS2 Apple iPhone Forums

Overview : The HDfury is a revolutionary product that allows you to use the full resolution (up to 1080p) of any DVI/HDMI device on a CRT projector, PC monitor, older HDTV/Plasma TV, or any other device without a DVI/HDMI input! If you own a high quality projector/monitor/TV that does not have a DVI/HDMI connector you need this device! Why buy a new expensive display device when your existing one can already support high definition?

HDfury module will transform any "technically able" ANALOG display into a DIGITAL display performing a perfect visual HD & Full HD fury @ 720p/1080p from any HDMI/HDCP sources such as HD-DVD/Blu-Ray players, PS3, X360 Elite, Satellite/Cable HDTV set-top boxes, HTPCs with HDMI graphic cards, to name a few! Simply plug the HDfury into your projector, your DVI/HDMI device into the HDfury, and watch! Installation takes seconds.

The HDfury delivers a razor sharp picture with absolutely NO video noise. The picture quality improvement as compared to RGBHV analog video is immediately obvious, providing an amazingly clear and detailed picture!

The HDfury is 100% HDCP compliant. It is not an 'HDCP stripper'. The HDCP copy protected digital signal is first decrypted and then the digital RGB 4:4:4 signal is converted to an analog signal.
So i dont know any1 who has used one yet but it might be worth looking at.

    Re: Playstation 3 Cables.....

there's no official way to drive VGA from a PS3 (despite the rather rare official cable for the ps2)

but an upscaler box as linked by gtech might do the job, with a hit on quality (some vga boxes are terrible, some are not, usually more money makes for better images)

i have the same monitor has you and was way pissed off that DVI to hdmi diddntn work(had to take back the cable as i found out the hard way).

i then got one of these instead which is far cheaper then that hd fury.

Amazon.co.uk: 1080P Component to VGA Box (YPbPR to RGBHV) Converter Transcoder: Electronics & Photo

dos the job realy well for my none hd ready tv that onlu has a vga connection but bewhere, on the dell monitor it looks bad. the colour contrast is too high

    Re: Playstation 3 Cables.....

Another thing to watch out for is which DVI connections you have.

My Old PC monitor has a DVI-I connector. This is anolouge and digital.

HDMI and DVI-D are pure digital. You cannot connect DVI - I to a DVI-D conector. Or VGA to DVI-D.

I've seen some Samsung Monitors in PC World. Quite nice.
They are HDCP compatable and have a VGA and DVI-D connectors on the back.
Since DVI-D and HDMI are both purely didgital you can connect them up via a cheap adapter.

I have heard people saying Dell monitors are pretty good.

This ticks similiar boxes for hooking a PS3 to:

    Also at Scan:
