no, it just plugs into the cartridge slot on the megadrive, everything else relies on the megadrive itself.

I never had one of those - went out of fashion so quickly I couldn't save up in time, lol.

I enjoy playing virtua racing on 32x enabled Gens though, hehe.

I think you need a game to test it, Computer Exchange should have a couple

Nope. It works by overlaying its own graphics onto the graphics coming out of the Megadrive, so if you just plug in the MD you'll only get about a quarter of the game (usually the background). You need a cable to go from the Megadrive to the 32X, and they're pretty much impossible to find as far as I can tell. I tried to make one once but I couldn't find a pin-in for the 32X socket. I went ahead on the basis that it was probably the same as the pin-out, but it didn't work. Mini-Dins are an absolute nightmare to solder though, it could have been that I had some duff connections. I bought a bunch of games hoping that I'd be able to get the thing going but I've never been able to play them . About £25 wasted . It was annoying too, about two weeks after I bought it I saw another guy at the same boot sale who'd just picked up a complete boxed one with all the cables. It also needs its own power supply BTW, I believe it's the same as a Mega Drive 2.

I'm afraid so mate . The power supply isn't such a problem, you can use a generic one (mine took a bit of fiddling but it worked). It actually came with three video cables I believe, because the AV out of the MD1 and MD2 were different (Din and Mini-Din respectively).

And...um...obviously you'll need a 32X game to use it too, I'm sure you've realised that by now.

I often wonder if I should root through the big boxes of cables that people sometimes have at boot fairs, but I suspect I'd have to look through a fair few until I found what I wanted!
