But seriously, after reading the discussion going on about MGS4 getting 10/10 it made me think about the old question of whether assigning number or a percentage to a game to illustrate the quality is really the right way to do things?
It just seems a bit silly to me, arguing whether a game deserves an 8, 9 or 10 when the review is entirely subjective anyway. In the case of MGS4, people are arguing whether Eurogamer's 8 was actually a good enough score or not (I generally assume an 8 is a pretty good score), or whether OPSM were justified in giving it a 10 when they apparently wanted to go higher (though I assume that's more down to Sony's Marketing dept. than actual editorial decision). And I really don't see how reviews assign numbers on a 100 scale, do they just flip a coin to decide between 87% and 88%?
I seem to remember an issue of Edge when they deliberately left out any scores on their reviews so you'd actually have to read the opinions of the reviewers, but it didn't go down well that I recall.
I actually found reading Eurogamer's scoring policy quite amusing: The Eurogamer scoring system /// Eurogamer
