TF2 model/graphics bug (and some other games)

    Hey guys,
Not completely sure where I should put this, so feel free to correct me so I know for the future.

    Onto the problem:

I get this weird model bug in TF2 (and in a few other games; gears of war being one)

It only happens at certain angles too, happens on all the models, and can be any part of the model. The severity of the glitch varies, but its usually big and noticeable - same applies to gears of war.

So I was wondering if anyone else gets this problem and knows why?
Its only started recently (past 2 months or so) but is damn annoying.

    Thanks

I've seen this sort of thing in BF2 and 2142, it turned out to have been caused by overheating, although it wasn't clear if it was CPU or GPU related. Check your load temperatures and clean out any dust that may be impeding airflow.

Re: TF2 model/graphics bug (and some other games)

D'oh. Should have mentioned those bits. No, nothings overclocked.
As for the drivers, Ive gone systematically through Catalyst 8.1 to 8.5 and it does it on all of them.

Ah 8.6 is out...I guess I should try that. Doubt it will fix it. Ive talked to someone with an Nvidia card and they don't seem to have this problem, and they have an almost identical PC.

PC is pretty much dust free - as for the over heating, my X1950XT runs ~70deg on load, not much I can do about that.
Thing is it does it straight off, as soon as I load the game, you will come across it, so I'm assuming it can't be a heat issue.

Re: TF2 model/graphics bug (and some other games)

    Looks strange.....

I would try removing your gfx drivers and using a driver-cleaning program to remove the rest.. then reinstall.
I noticed a slight graphical glitch in TF2 recently, a small box towards the upper right of the screen, turned out to be the gfx drivers, i was using "hacked" beta nvidia geforce280 drivers that id installed to test CUDA folding...

PS how you finding the new pyro mods?

Re: TF2 model/graphics bug (and some other games)

Pretty sure this is your graphics cards ram, whether it is because it is going faulty or overheating I wouldn't know.
What is your graphics card temperature idle?

I'm betting it's overheating vRAM chips. I seem to remember an issue with some X1950's made by Saphire, it's worth having a check on Google for artifacts on your card model just in case. Unfortunately, if I'm right, it also means there's sod all you can do about it, unless the card is new enough to return under warrenty.

I had that on my old 8800GTX, but only in Medieval II Total War...
Turned out my card had bad memory chips on it, so I had to RMA...
I hope its only overheating chips for you...

Phone up the company for RMA info...I don't know how long ago you purchased the card, but maybe also the e-/retailer

do you have a different PCI-E slot you can try it in? (just to make sure)

Re: TF2 model/graphics bug (and some other games)

Yea I do have another slot, but it means moving things out of the way.. Im going to stick a fan in front of the card and see what goes down.

I bought the card (and the PC) over a year ago and its been fine the whole time, need to find my gfx card invoice now.

Is it possible that there's been some damage to the ram/VRM?

Its either this, or a gpu / memory issue.

What you're seeing is a tell-tale sign of miscalculations on the graphics card. Certainly if you're seeing it in more than one game.

I see this _all_ the time in graphics cards that are on their way out / already broken. Swap the card and I'll put money on it stopping.

Re: TF2 model/graphics bug (and some other games)

Have you ever given the graphics card a good clean? Just because it might look clean at first glance doesn't mean it is, if your card has a face plate it's likely there is a shed load of dust clogged up in your heatsink fins.

Worth a go before you admit defeat.

Re: TF2 model/graphics bug (and some other games)

Well I stuck a deskfan infront of the gfx card and the problem never appeared. My GPU load temp still went up to about 74deg but no glitches. Ive now made a makeshift fan arm holder and put a 120mm onto it, and its blowing air over the back end of the card and I've had no problems so far.

    Thanks guys.
