Anyone tried running sacrifice on XP

Ive been thinking of buying that game again after 8 years since ive lost my original copy but after redownloading the demo ive run into insufficient page file bug which im not quite sure how to solve .Googling it brings a couple of threads about Wine but i dont understand what they are changing and where to make it work.

If i bought the actual game again , would it work on my win xp or would it just not start like the demo?

well i borrowed a copy from a friend today and installed patch#3 but it wont let me play it because it says : insufficient page file even though ive got plenty of page file.

this seems to suggest how to fix it but i dont understand how exactly, any ideas?

Looks like it's simply determining the size of free space on your hard drive and hitting the old 2gb limit.

You could probably install it in a partition that was no greater than 2gb.

Well i reduced the size of page file to like 250mb and it runs but i have to reboot every time i want to play something else that needs a normal page file a bit annoying.

Smile Re: Solution to pagefile error.

I was trying to install Sacrifice for the first time in about 5 years. I likely had not installed it since before XP SP2 so i was surprised to find this error message:

"Insufficient pagefile space. Please insure that Virtual Memory is enabled and that you have more than 128mb of space free on your pagefile drive before running Sacrifice. Go to "My Computer -> Properties -> Performance -> Virtual Memory..." for more information."

I Googled it and easily found information on these sites but there seemed to be much confusion about a proper fix. I was also very unimpressed to find no support from Interplay, Shiny or the merged developer Double Helix Games. Best case scenario, I could buy a current version of the game that works on XP for US$9.99.

Now why they would extend this privilege of working on xp to owners of the actual game i don't know. This would likely be an easy patch for them to release if they already have a working version. But sadly patch #3 does not do this and no 3.1 visible anywhere.

But there were 2 options that many of you listed.

    (#1)
    - Using lpatch to patch the file with a non authorized patch. I had high hopes for this to work and it may work for some. For me if you tried to patch Sacrifice.exe after installing patch number 3 it said that you did not have Sacrifice installed if i remember right. And when I tried to install it on a fresh install it still gave me the page file error (I even reinstalled the computer for other reasons, still not). Seems that I am not the only one to have this problem with lpatch. No judging that some of you said this option worked for some of you leads me to believe there were slightly different releases of the game originally. In response to 1 person's reasons for lpatch not working it did not work on a fresh install (unpatched) and how the hell could the executable be manually packed or compressed when i just installed it on a default XP install.

    (#2)
Changing the pagefile size to a lower than normal size was the other common suggestion. Commonly i saw 500mb or 250mb which is quite smaller. I tried to do extensive testing to get the max allowed size. Rebooting repeatedly to find the max and then making very slow increments to reach the precise limit. The game would not throw an error for me with a minimum page file size of 930mb or less. Still worked with a minimum of 930mb and a maximum of 5000mb. But would not work with a minimum of 931mb and a maximum of 931mb.

    To summarize for those skimming:
    930-5000mb Yes
    931-931mb No
    ----- WORKS!!!! -----

    (#3)
Only things I didn't try because i got mine working was to try the system managed size.

Best of luck! Write nasty letters to Interplay and Double Helix! Later.
