So whats it all about then, noticed that its mentioned in the fps thread, but never really been aware of it. Is it single player, multi, any hints and tips? Looks interesting enough for me to order a copy of the gold edition but could do with some info from player

    Re: ArmA??

ArmA - Armed Assault. Latest patch is 1.14 and it's probably the best modern war/battlefield simulator currently available. It's written by the same people who did the original Operation Flashpoint, and is based on a slightly scaled down version of a battlefield simulator used by various military forces. When released it was a bit of a mess because of 2 reasons. 1 - it was buggy as hell, and 2 - even now it can bring a decent machine to its knees.

It's a fairly open ended game in that although there are scenarios and missions as part of the package, the real fun is to be had with custom missions. Nothing is scripted, AI responds individually each time so no two attempts at a mission are the same. To be honest, leave the single player though and head onto a multiplayer server.

Unlike most FPS, I'd say the majority of servers out there play Co-Op missions where you're trying to capture various parts of a (huge) map against AI. The most popular mission played is the 'Evolution' missions where you'll play as either Blue (US forces) or Red (Russian based). In these missions you start off as a basic Private and by killing AI and capturing territory you can rank up. Once you start to rank up you unlock bigger guns, can use better vehicles etc.

Unlike most FPS, this needs to be thought of as a bit more of a sim. It's no BF2 a like where 100 bullets are needed to drop a bloke. One shot can be (and often is) fatal. View distances can be anything up to 5km (remember what I said about it killing your rig?!) and ballistics are properly modelled so that lead can fly that far! You can get the M107 .50 cal rifle and pummel people from 1600m away - they never know what hits them! Of course the down side is, often you can find yourself spending a large amount of time travelling from the spawn point to the action, only to find yourself on the business end of something small and pointy without ever knowing where it came from...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a slower paced 'game' than something like BF2 because the action is spread out over a huge area, but when it kicks off it really kicks off, and you need to be on your toes. It's one of the few games where you really have a fear factor, since dying is a right pain in the backside, so is to be avoided!

Graphically it's not too bad. Shows its age a little in places, but it's more than up to the job and it makes the BF2 engine look prehistoric. Good video of it here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7kYU2KyJng

I'll try to find a vid of the tracer effect - it's second to none on any game I've ever seen. Evolution missions generally run a full on 24 hour day/night time scale (because these missions last days - it's that big!), and the tracer fire at night (esp AAA) is breathtaking.

    Re: ArmA??

    Typical kind of gameplay here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0I_d...eature=related

Make sure you get the Gold edition if you do - it's got the add on pack as standard with it, extra missions and guns and stuff.

/edit - oh yeah forgot to mention the mods that are available. Hundreds - no joke. All sorts of stuff from AI mods to graphics tweaks and the like to make it look better, explosions better etc.

Oh yeah - and it's the only game to have a 'double sound' to the gun fire, in that you hear both the gun firing as well as the whistle and crack as the bullet passes near you. With that you can roughly work out how far someone is away from you that's shooting at you!

    Re: ArmA??

Have ordered Gold, hopefully should get it tomorrow. Look like my kind of thing, have spent quiet a bit of time on the more tactical fps dating back to the original rainbow six and OP flashpoint, more recently RO, AA, and PR.

    Re: ArmA??

Well, once you get it patch it up to 1.14.

Single player will be hugely underwhelming to be honest, the real deals to be found online.

If you want we could perhaps organise a bit of a game some time and I'll walk you through it. I'm part of the .:iGi:. Clan and we've got a couple of servers.

    http://www.imgoingin.co.uk

Pop over and introduce yourself in the ArmA section and we can sort something out.

Lowe, you've sold it to me as well!

I just recently found out about it myself and it sounds amazing, will grab it this weekend too! Sounds epic!

    Re: ArmA??

Yup, v2 shortly, but if it's anything like v1, it'll be 18 months before we can play it.

EA stole Bohemia's thunder to be honest and it never got the attention it really deserved with BF2 about.

Just remember - like any sim it's got a steep learning curve initially. Defo get online with a few guys who know what they're doing, stick close to them and take it all in.

For some reason it still doesn't work with vista 64 and 4 gig, i know people have with fidling but i'm not buyin it with that. But yet the origional operation flashpiont (also a second on the way) works fine with vista 64

I expect i'll be buying the second ones of both though.

    Re: ArmA??

While the patches realeased really improve the playablity, Arma still lacks polish, it has got its quircks which you can love or hate though but the AI make single player experiance very unfair.

If you into soldier sims I would really recomend Project Reality for Battlefield 2, absolutly amazing mod and in my opioion so much better than vanilla BF2.

I don't see how they could go wrong with Arma 2, it would seem to me like a much improved version of Arma which is ideal.

The latest 1.14 patch supposedly solves the 4 gig Vista issue. Can't say I have personal experience though since I don't run either.

PR is superb and where I cut my teeth with soldier sims. It doesn't have the scale for me though, and I lost interest at about v0.6.

It fixed the issue for me. Sadly, by then, I'd lost interest in actually playing it.
