    S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

I know this is a 2 year old game but I picked it up recently and got round to installing and playing it.

I do enjoy some aspects of the game but even though I am early in the game, I don't seem to meet anything other than bandits/stalkers, blind dogs and what I could call weird sheep things...oh and mutated boar/pig. Please tell me there are other things to encounter (and kill) in this game?

Oh and is there anything beyond just running point to point doing missions/tasks/quests? It's getting quite tiresome running back and forth, especially with the pathetic weight limit.

It gets more interesting - some quite disturbing creatures, new places, etc.

    Re: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

Reason I stopped playing it. Was gradually getting closer into the zone and got to the big area with the pub in it then just got bored and uninstalled. Tunnel system to find something or other with the first mutants wasn't to bad and the area that has the poltergeists was pretty good also must admit, really creepy.

Thing is though it just becomes tedious after running backwards and forwards doing fetch like quests etc. Granted, it looks nice even on medium details but I do find the gameplay lacking.

    Re: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

    good good.

I spent an hour last night collecting guns from "mini depots" I made so I could take it back to a trader to sell. Even worse is the constantly spawning enemies, which meant even MORE guns. I even had to sell pistol ammo, over 1000 rounds of the stuff. I still have 200+ rounds at the moment.

Does the game do much for plot in terms of this Strelok person, who you are etc.?

    EDIT:
That's a shame about the fetching quests. I've wacked all the details up as high as I could and it does look yummy. Just annoying at the pathetic line up of guns I have, pistol, sawn off shot gun, some AK gun and something like an MP5. I want something with a scope so I can head shot people!

    Re: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

I find it one of those games I looked forward to so much and when it was released I just didn't like it at all. I have tried to get along with it so many times now but just can't get past the boredom that seems to set in pretty quick. It feels like it has no depth at all with a pretty poor story. That kind of location you can do so much with it, but it seems to be all graphics and no gameplay.

I bought this game when it came out and played it for a few sessions briefly. Never got far and stopped playing after playing other games such as Oblivion (Never completed this as well, but I can spend weeks and months on this game if I had all the time in the world )
(The only games I've completed recently have been Crysis, C&C3 and Kane's Wrath. Now I'm playing World in Conflict which is a fantastic game)
Think I'll try STALKER again after WiC.

    Re: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

I really enjoyed Stalker once they got the first few patches out. I think the running about and getting weighed down is the thing most people complained about.. just try and get hold of some artifacts that allow you to carry more. I think once you get to the first main town with the pub and various factions the story opens up a bit.

Deffo make sure you get the latest patch though, as I gave up early on with the game out of the box, and enjoyed it much more when it got to patch 0004 or 0005.

Patched the game up last night to 0005 and my save games are corrupt. So gotta start all over from the start again. Not enjoying that but finding armour early on helped alot in the first combat and knowing how easy ammo is to come by, going nuts with the pistol.

Aye yeh thats the only problem, the save games aren't compatible :/ I dont believe it corrupts them, but you would have to go back to an unpatched version to load them. I had done most of the first couple of zones before I patched and had to go back to the start, but tbh there was too many problems from what I remember in the unpatched game that made it rather frustrating to play.

Starting a fight between the stalkers in the first camp and the military just down the road works a treat to get you a few big guns early on.

Wish I knew beforehand. Hehe. I think there is patch 0006 out but I am dubious as not all download locations have it.

There is armour right near the start that is SOOO much help during combat. I lost count the number of times I died in my first forray into a fight (as I like doing things solo). The armour IS hidden and found it via a gamefaq guide (I was actually looking for where pseudodogs are located).

    Re: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

AFAIK the 0006 patch only fised a couple of multiplayer issues and, from reading what others have written, was withdrawn due to creating more stability issues with the game.

If you go over to the official forums you can find many mods for the game, the graphical ones can be really good. Then again you do need to have a fast PC to make full use of them..!!!

    http://www.gsc-game.com/index.php?t=...ype=xr&lang=en

    http://forum.v5g.de/showthread.php?t=10034

The mod that I'm using at the moment...

    http://www.gsc-game.com/index.php?t=...ype=xr&lang=en

    http://www.thefloatingpoint.org/main/news.php

    http://stalker.filefront.com/file/ST...erhauled;89293

The mod manager, helps to control things if you want to try out multiple mods, NOT for mod merging.

    http://gizmostripe.googlepages.com/

    another mod manager...

    http://www.gsc-game.com/index.php?t=...ype=xr&lang=en

Be very careful if and when you try out any of the mods to ensure that if you try and mix them together they can have undesired effects..!!!

To use any mods you need to...

Make sure you also edit fsgame.ltx, found in the root folder of the game and can be edited with notepad, and overwrite the first line with:

    $game_data$= true| true| $fs_root$| gamedata\

    previously it would state "False"

Some of the more simple mods just increase the load that you can carry or the speed that you can travel, they can be fun

An amazing game. Can have spells of quietness, but its hellishly freaky. May install it again!!

    Re: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

If you load your stuff up in a stash (like one of those steel boxes that may or may not have goodies in) does it ever disappear?

I'm in garbage at the moment and I'm accumulating ALOT of guns and ammo and even another set of Merc armour. I'm hording it all...well I use it as a dumping depot until I get bored enough to do runs back to someone who will buy the guns off me. I'll keep some of the ammo (depending on what gun I decide to use).

Just don't tell me your stuff will just disappear one day...there is alot in that box; bandages, medikits, a pre-modified silenced Akm 74 U (i think it's called) and like I said before SHED loads of ammo. Oh and alot of artifacts too.

There is a review of the expansion pack up at Eurogamer now; doesn't seem to be quite as good as the rather phenomenal original STALKER.
