Signs of a dying 360?? Is mine next! :(

    Hi,

I have a launch console (premium)
But when I popped in my Mass effect game the other day, while in the options screen after the xbox having been on about 5mins, I got artifacts all over the screen. (Kinda like you get on a PC with a really bad OC or if you get a faulty video card). It then froze within about a second of doing that. I had to turn it off, tuned it back on and it was fine. Played for a couple of hours and NP's.
Then I tried out the DOA4 demo a couple of days later, and the same thing happened again, about 5-10mins in, mid-fight, artifacts and lockup. but I played Grid on it fine for 2 hours after that??

This has never happened to me before, when I first got the console I would get the odd lockup, but assumed it was a bug in the game cus it nevered happened again after that. Now this.

Is it a sign that RROD is imminent??

Also, when you send it back in, do you have to send in everything? Or is it literally just the console. I'm thinking of getting an elite when/if it goes, and I want to be able to transfer my data across to the new hdd.

Any more info other than yes?

Mine is back, has been for a while.

How long is a piece of string? It might last a month, it might last 5 minutes, but it will RROD or E74 at some point in the near future. Then you can either use the towel trick to bring it back to life, or send it in. Best to send it.

When you send it back you just send the console, no HD, no leads.

That's what I said isn't it? Though the definition of 'just' is a bit vague - Stew gives a nice range of timelines it can take.

What is actually causing the artifacts if it carries on okay after? :s
Do you want the long answer or the short one? In a fit of rare social eloquence for a scientist I'll assume the latter: Heat. You've got a heat-pipe system that is failing to work properly, which means either the GPU is working outside of it's normal heat range so reliability is intermittent, or the cooling itself is intermittent. Either way there is a cumulative effect towards total failure.

Get it back to MS now. The 3 year extended warranty for RROD will be up for you in December. After that you'll going to have to fight MS or the shop your bought it from. Make it easy on yourself and just get it sorted out now.

But they wont take it back till its actually rrod though?

I'm thinking about getting an elite. That way I can transfer my stuff, and sell the refurb/repair console when it comes back. That way I dont go without a console . And get the HDMI and 120gb hdd.

    What do you guys think.

    Cheers.

Well if its got any sort of problem, other than RROD, you can send it back within 1 year, if its RROD wthin 3 years.

Well seeing as its a launch console it is still under 3 yr warranty. but not 12month. So I guess, i can send it back when it rrods?

i'm prob gonna buy an elite in the morning, order a transfer kit, and in the mean time carrying on using it, waiting for rrod.

Is the 3 yr warranty on new consoles too? i.e if I buy a new 360 tomorrow for example, will it have a 3 yr rrod warranty as well?

    Cheers for the help.

Yes, 3 years RROD protection is standard.

I'd buy an Elite, as you said (its not RROD proof though, my Elite has RROD'd on me and been repaired) and leave the Premium on for a good few hours, get it to RROD and ship it to the Soft.

You end up with a better console, and a new Premium to flog.
