Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

I've been playing this for months now, and have taken great satisfaction working my way through the songs and difficulty. Having got 5* or perfect in every medium song (apart from 4* and 2.6 multi on Slayer - Raining Blood) i've been slowly progressing through Hard.

Its taken months of effort and i'm showing a good 32 songs complete, with a few 5* among the group and a lot of others with 100K+ scores showing i'm not scrapping through them.

But oh my god i've hit song set 7 and i feel completely swamped. Beats per minute on all of these songs is just so unkind compared the previous set.

With the play speed of the fast sections of Knights of Cydonia by Muse being finger wrenching hard.

I've been trying for a week and my fingers are blistered, my poor spirit is wondering whether this might be the stumbling block.

Anyone else hit this issue?, this song? others?. Any suggestions for Set 7 and 5 fingers of magic? :-)

I'm impressed that you've done so well on hard - i've done about the same on medium, but even the first set on hard swamps me.
Really tough.... i've mentally boxed it away until GH4 comes out and i can (finally) get some multiplayer loveliness on my wii.

Oh, and the Muse one on medium is tough, so you just getting through that... Re-spec'

It's fiendish game, practice makes perfect really. Im at the last boss on hard (blood boss battles) and upto set 7 on expert.

Strumming up and down and hitting hammer ons and offs is essential to do the last few on hard and most on expert.

Songs like stricken arn't hard at all if you can get those hammer ons and offs sorted. Use practice mode too it does help!

Re: Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

Hard is not that bad once you get used to it - you will actually find medium so incredibly dull to play once you get used to it.. I get bored with easy/med songs now as they are painfully slow.

The first thing to do when learning to play on hard/expert modes is what you have already done - 4 or 5* every medium song.

Following on from that you need to play a bunch of medium songs with a different fingering position. I am assuming here that you are playing with whats probably a "normal" fingering - so your first finger is on green, index on red etc. Rather than this, shift everything accross one. So you actually never rest a finger on green - your first finger is resting on red. This will feel odd at first, but its the key to playing the higher tier songs on hard, and to all expert mode songs.

This will teach you to move your hand about the neck of the guitar, which you need to do on hard due to the extra note.

Other than that the key is practice, practice practice, and also make the most of star power. Muse for example gets pretty easy on hard and expert if you time your star power correctly - that is at the start of the "gallops". These are pretty much all grace notes anyway on hard/expert which makes them fairly easy if you can get the timing right, but activating full star power at this point in the song (and at no time before) means that when you miss a note, you can get right back into the song for the easy end bit without dieing.

I have got up to the same point as spazman really - last boss on hard, and tier 7 on expert mode..annoyingly its just 3s and 7s that I can't get from that tier, but I think thats because the song is syncopated and well, I hate it, so find it hard to get in to.

It is well worth the effort to get good at hard mode - seriously it makes the game so much more fun, especially when you get to expert as the notes match *much* closer to the real song, which actually makes some of it easier as you can play with correct timings rather than slowed down medium ones

oh and play Closer and avalancha a *lot* - closer is the easiest song in the game but teaches some good things about expert mode, and avalancha has some interesting bits that will help to ease you in to the more difficult songs on hard/expert

Re: Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

Its muse in 7 i cant do on expert, drives me crazy maybe we should swap lol. Id agree about the hand movement, expert is virtually impossible without it. You need to be able to jump from the bottom four notes to the top four notes without thinking about it. Again practice , i got upto set 7 on hard got bored of it being too hard then started doing expert, went back to tear 7 and walked it. Only 'hard' song on hard is bloody slayer and its stupid Drizzle 1 . Also although the song makes me want to shoot myself barracuda on expert is good for practicing up and down strums.

Re: Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

Oh, thats another thing..thanks for reminding me

Double strumming. You will need this for some songs on hard, and quite a few on expert. Most people - myself included - prefer to strum down all the time. So each new note will be a downward strum. This is nice and easy, but it will make things very difficult when your trying to play 16ths on some of the more difficult songs, as you have to downstrum multiple times a second.

So, the trick to that is to do down, then up, then down, then up again, just like you would on a real guitar. You get almost double the number of strums for the same amount of time then, and you will find you are able to cope with much faster songs than you are used to. This is another technique you can learn on medium, and then migrate across to hard/expert

Re: Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

I think that the easiest song I've come across is probably RATM - Bulls On Parade (at least I got the 360 achievement of 'pass a song on expert with 0 volume in options' - got 5 stars too )

Hard, I managed to beat the final boss with a LOT of swearing and restarting...

On Expert, I'm stumped on The Dead Kennedys - Holiday In Cambodia, the first bit I just can't get the timing right, and fail every time. Hard.

I managed the 5 stars on Easy and Medium, all songs, and a couple in Hard and even Expert. I mainly hate the songs where you have to jump from, say, green/yellow/orange chord to red/blue/orange chord, or some such like that.

As for Dragonforce... I think I failed after about 1/2 second on expert mode, with hard not much better :s

The speed difference between the modes is mad too, like someone said, play expert for a short while and then you're in a state to fail easy from being too fast!

TiG, you aren't the only blister-fingered player, I get that a lot whilst I play, and I really don't help myself by ripping them open with real guitar strings afterwards!

Not played for a little while actually, got new batteries now so I may do so tonight *makes mental note*

Re: Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

I've completed Hard save Lou, mostly 5 starred up until about 7

Alt strumming is the ONLY way to do some songs, but switching between the two is better.

I actually thought Slayer was alright..

One nearly got me every time - star like hell when you get to the solo (after the fast drums) and just keep strumming so you get a few of the notes.

The key is timing mostly, a lot of the time if you cock up you'll try to compensate and that's where you lose.

And of course practice. The bonus songs are quite good for that as well, so go through them

Practice mode is alright, but i find that the slower beat is off-putting since it's not noticeably half speed or whatever.

Re: Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

Hard does get very hard. The only people I have seen breeze through it were people that had played the guitar to a decent level of competency before. I guess it has something to do with finger co-ordination.

I basically can only play hard/expert if I "zone out" and play it almost subconsciously, never thinking about the notes, just doing it instinctively - almost like an out of body experience....the moment I start to think about anything at all that I am doing, I completely and utter fall to bits and miss almost every note.

Re: Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

Lots of accounts I have heard (including Slash's in-game video that you can buy) from guitarists, myself included, say it is really hard to play this game as a real-life guitar player. The finger movements are completely different, it's a whole new style that you have to learn, but until you can get over your mental image of how to play the game, you keep failing big time.

I had real trouble on easy to start off with... when I went up to medium it was even harder again... and hard mode was super hard. Only expert was somewhat more balanced, easier to adjust to because there's not a 6th button... harder because it's so fast and with lots of notes.

Got to agree there, I also find it a lot more tiring than playing an actual guitar, and I just cannot find a comfortable/relaxed way of using the fretboard, I have to have a 3 minute break after every couple of songs to ease the aches I get.

My mates cheat on this game, on certain songs they have a straw and elastic band to keep the furtherst button held down so they have their fingers on the other buttons and strum like mad. It worked too. Cheating gits. lol. Another mate finds it easier to do it on the normal xbos controller. Weird eh?

Re: Guitar Hero 3 - Have I finally hit the wall :(

It doesn't work on any chords which doesn't include that note though, chords have to be exactly right.

The controller can be easier, no wild finger movements, but you have to get really good on it to get anywhere.

Anyways, I've done Holiday In Cambodia on expert now, just Same Old Song And Dance to finish this stage... then Slash and G'n'R... :/

EDIT: Christ, Slash is impossible :/

It keeps giving me the option to 'wuss out', not had that on any other difficulty on any boss I must be terrible after this long absence . Got < 300k on Devil Went Down To Georgia on medium, that kinda proves it too lol
