    GTAIV In Context.

So anyone still playing this? Personally I've not played it in a while, since I 100%ed the single player, need a bit of a break before I jump into the online.

What we think then, now that the dust has settled?

Did it live up the the hype, were those 10/10 review scores on IGN and Gamespot justified?

It was clearly a great game, fun to play, sky high production values, proper mans game - drugs, guns, car chases and a bit of minge.

I'd say it got a lot closer to justifying the hype than stuff like Halo3, because GTA4 does feel epic when you are playing it, it does feel like a milestone game that everyone who just likes playing good games should deffo have at least a few goes on.

The problems for me, even now I've finished the single player completely and know the game inside out, is that Rockstar needed to spend a little less time sticking Ricky Gervais in the game, and getting every street sign looking as realistic as possible, and spend a bit more time on the boring, but very important, basic controls.

Imagine the scene - 3 yards in front of me is a gangster, with a machine gun, firing said machine gun at my face. 300 yards behind me is an old woman, with a bag of shopping, walking away from me.

My aiming cursor is almost-but-not-quite pointing at the gangster as I press it down fully... and I watch with confusion as I turn around and the target places itself on the old woman.

She is further away (distance) further away (angle) less of a threat and obviously not the target.

    Pretty basic stuff.

And Niko controls like C3PO in the latter stages of parkinsons disease. Clunking around, getting stuck on bits of the game world, jumping over things in separate, overly deliberate moves... and having to press A to run? Really? Niko is no Lara Croft.

This for me is the issue - all the flashy stuff, the music, the comedy clubs with real comedians, the work that has gone into it - all great, but it needed a tad more work on the bread and butter controls.

Still I enjoyed playing it more than any game since Mario Galaxy, and while those 10/10 reviews were obviously written by hyped up monkies, Its certainly up there in the 9.5-9.8 sorta scores.

Not perfect, but pretty much the most impressive game I've played for many a year.

    Thoughts people?

Definitely not a 10/10 game IMO.
Fun, but not a perfect game by any means.

    Miss out Ricky Gervais?

They have him in the game? Woh!

I need to go and "borrow" this game off of a friend or something

Aye, Gervais is one of the turns at the comedy club, doing a few minutes of his routine from one of his DVDs. Its all good.

No, its lastibilty. About 3 weeks to start with, and I occasionally go back to mess around with my mates online or just mop up some side missions. More like a 9.8.

Epic? Perhaps sometimes, looking down from the top of the Empire State building at night is a prime example of beauty in a video, and missions like "Three Leaf Clover" were brilliant fun. But were these moments "epic"?

That is bloody annoying, but its a lot better than on previous versions. The main control issue for me is the cover system. Its brilliant simple and it works (just about), but when I'm stood in front of a perfect bit of cover being shot at by some bloody Russian with a Kalashnikov, I want to go behind the cover that will protect me, I don't want to push myself against the wall where I can still be shot at.

But I am finding fault for the sake of it, after all this game is just about as perfect as I've ever seen, with breath taking attention to detail and solid, fun gameplay. And the multiplayer is absolutely brilliant. Find a bunch of mates and have a private match and its probably the most fun you can have on any game.

    Bring on GTA5!

The whole game, the story, the missions, the music, the sights, the sounds, the hype. It was on the BBC news at 10, it was in all the papers. Its one of those games that everyone should play. The production values are sky high, its like playing through a gangster movie. Its funny, its exciting. More than any other game recently it is modern video gaming.

    Re: GTAIV In Context.

Once it was first released I instantly didn't think it was worth the hype and 10/10 reviews, but it really is a great game indeed. Totally agree with a score around the 9.8 mark, and your also right with your views on it being 'epic', definitely in terms of the level design, i probably lost a fair few hours just staring up to the sky, taking in the views of the buildings and all the detail. Don't forget looking down too, there is also tremendous amounts of details on the street levels too, added with seamless loading it makes it very nice to play.

Yeah for me too, the controls are a big let down, they definitely are pretty clunky and quite annoying to use. Single player its and issue of course, but its a bigger issue once you start playing online, it can get very frustrating when it just does not do what you asked it to.

I disagree with it having bad last-ability though. Just because you don't play something as much as you first did once its was released doesn't mean its lost its playability... I started playing it when it was released and loved it, played it all the time and completed it pretty fast, and even got 100% pretty fast too. after that i continued playing and went on line for a load longer. I still play it occasionally, but most of the time its just to have fun messing around, taking in the sheer scale of the world, views, sounds etc. I also still play to explore, even though I have literally played it to death and covered every area, as with every GTA there is always something else you can do when you add great level design and vehicles, physics etc mixed with a bit of imagination and possibilities are near endless.

Online is really fun too, It's obviously no COD4 or CS in terms of how great it plays as a DM, although it is still great fun to play. Also, although its pretty much inescapable online, you still get jackass kids intent on ruining specific gametypes such as races, for example you nearly always have one guy who decides to drive around the track the wrong way and make it his objective to smash into the oncoming racers. VERY annoying when your in first place for the whole race and miss out on a win. Where the real fun lies online, is private games with a few friends where your open to explore he whole game and enjoy a huge sandbox. some friends + tall buildings & helicopters is a great combination. If anyone has ever messed around with the GTA:SA multiplayer mod over lan you'll probably know what i'm getting at.

Anyway, I think it was great and still is great. Bring on GTA V!

Oh Finlay, you do know there is a 'sleep' mode on the phone right? it will basically just turn it off to allow you to play uninterrupted and have fun. look in the options within the phone.

    Re: GTAIV In Context.

I started playing this again about a month ago and still play it every weekend.

I'm caught between 2 games. One I have started again and the story complete one.
I have just started using motorbikes. The Harley type one my favorite.
I find it hard to find any real holes in this game. Nothing seems wooden (Like Oblivion's NPC conversations) and there hasn't been a point in this game where I have ever found the enviroment to be static. Probably the best interaction in a gaming world I have ever seen.

The other day I stopped my car on a busy road. The car behind stopped. I got out and pointed my gun at the driver. She got out her car and went to run. But another car came by and run her over. The driver of that car got out and went to lok at the woman she run over. The woman she ran over got up and chased her down the road. Brilliant moments.

I have also just noticed the way the cars pull over and stop when you have your siren going in a police car.

The only glitch I found was with the cover system.

GTA IV, I have to say - The most convincing and realistic gaming world. EVER.
(have not played Far Cry 2 yet, which from what I hear is supposed to be an amazing free roaming game)
The best interation with NPC's and the eviroment I have ever seen.

A true benchmark to how far games have come. Only game I have played that truley lives up to the hype.

    Re: GTAIV In Context.

i think it felt like gta when you started doing missions for the cop on the 2nd island around that time when you had so many options of who to work for.
did love it but at first i was trying to tell myself it was 10/10 when it weren't... but after awhile i really loved it

i got up to first race for brucie and got bored i keep picking this game up and trying it but get bored and end up switching off me mobile and going to the airport to try and flip my car 5 times.

i love the game the idea that is but the actual game it just underwhelms me, i think i got caught up in the hype too much and now the game will never live up to what i expected of it!!!

I didn't like it and stopped playing at about ~7%....

Maybe I'll give it another whirl some time. Actually, most of the 360 games I have bought I definatly haven't gotten good value from....

Well to be honest mate maybe gaming just isn't for you? You have one of the best looking, most exciting, most fun, violent, car-chase-and-gun-fight filled games ever, and all you can muster is - 'I don't like it'.

Maybe knitting is more your thing?

I didnt like the shoddy, largely unchanged control system and the frame rate was dire. Hopefully, the pc version should address these problems. Imo, the 360 version (the only one i have tried) was verging on being an unplayable mess

Also, my 360 kept freezing during play. Obviously, this is not Rockstars fault though

what are you on about the control system was changed... unless your maybe referring to the xbox ports of the others? still has been changed for example the use of the d-pad etc...
as for 360 port must be your 360 as my elite never locked up or experienced and of the problems people have encountered... as for the frame rate it was smooth for me... they optimsed it for the 360 and ps3 as the ps3 one has more cars for example and more peps cause it can cope with more...
and verging on unplayable mess is a massive overstatement... either that or your 360 is shafted lol
