Does anyone play Warhammer online? Also, does anyone here like flight/chopper sims?

Does anyone play Warhammer online? If so, is it any good? I've seen people saying it is finally a good MMORPG to rival WoW.

Also, does anyone here like flight/chopper sims? If so, do you know about DCS: Black Shark? If not, you should, and if you do, then the release date was just announced! Wewt. Finally. If you don't know about it check it out here:

Re: Does anyone play Warhammer online? Also, does anyone here like flight/chopper sim

WAR isn't bad. For me its appeal is wearing thin pretty fast but I have seen a lot of MMOs and WARs formula is a bit transparent to me.

If you haven't played many/any MMOs, you would probably really like it but I find it overly generic. They have decided that class balance is key and created the game in such a way that it is as easy as possible for the developers to scale it up as the levels increase with expansions. To me, this is boring and makes just about every class seem pretty much the same, just the abilities have different names.

Gear is the same, literally. You can get 4 potential upgrades to a particular slot in the space of an hour, all look the same and are the same except for 1 stat change......as I said, way too generic.

RvR (PvP) is turning out to be the same as WoW, one side is over-populated by braindead idiots who can only fight when grossly out-numbering the opposition, which means that in outdoor PvP one side is dominant, yet in controlled battlefields the other side dominates.

Things like the public quests are an excellent idea and one of the best I have seen implemented in an MMO, unfortunately the queue times are such that I cannot be bothered to wait between 1 and 2 hours to log in for what is essentially WoW with very little PvE content and overly-simplified classes.

Re: Does anyone play Warhammer online? Also, does anyone here like flight/chopper sim

Thanks for all the info! I think I'll pass lol.

I heard such promising things too! But I heard it from people who had only played it briefly so were probably still drawn in by the novelty of it all. I'm a big MMORPG'er, or I was... I think the idea of PVE and PVP just doesn't work, unless there are completely different rulesets. It's always the same. If there is some flavour and distinction amongst the classes, then there ends up being balance issues. If there is none, then balance is ok but the classes are all flavourless and samey. It never seems to change. Game after game tries and fails.

I'll be interested to see if Darkfall manages any better but I've given up on the entire genre now really. As much as EverQuest was a special moment in my youth and I loved it, I just don't think I'll ever play one again unless the formula completely changes.

I'd say try it for yourself and see if you like it.

I've been playing since the 14th of last month and I'm still enjoying it very much. I played WoW for just over 2 years. I can see me playing this for quite some time as well.

Thanks Trash Man. I'll have to have a think about it. Maybe there will be a trial or something. Either way I'll probably wait until after FarCry2 and then see what happens

Re: Does anyone play Warhammer online? Also, does anyone here like flight/chopper sim

WAR is not quite a your typical MMORPG. Sure it has the same style of quests/crafting/class's as everyone MMO. All of which aren't as good as WoW for example. The thing about WAR is this RvR every one keeps talking about. Once you start wondering what that Zone control bar is about in the top right corner of your screen while you play, you see WAR in a whole new level that you hadn't imagined to start with. At least that is what I'm finding.

For me level 1 to 11 (Tier 1) was as good as any MMO I've played. Public Quests contributed a lot to my enjoyment of the early part of the game.
From 12 to 21 (Tier 2) I wasn't as impressed until I started doing Scenario's a lot. They really speed up the rate at which you level and are so easy to jump in and out of it makes the game very playable, even for short periods.
22 to 31 (Tier 3) has been a grind. The problem I've found is the population on my server has become really stretched out between levels. I'm playing on a server that has queues for Order and Destruction every evening. Even so, at times I've played a whole hour questing and only seen 4 or 5 other players. Sadly this has meant Public Quests are no longer as accessible and I'm skipping all of them now because there are not enough players around.

I'm 30.5 now and explored Tier 4 today. Absolutely immense is how I'd described my initial impressions. Heading over to Reikland I was amazed by the map. Mythic has really done an impressive job in this regard.
Shortly after hitting the RvR area I was right into a battle of around 75 Vs 75... HUGE battle! FPS took a nose dive but it was fun exchanging blows for 30 minutes or so while Destruction secure their keep and the action moved onto another zone - The Reikwald Fortress. This was a real sight. Siege weapons were in play and around 60 Destruction players started assaulting the walls of this massive Fortress. Didn't have a clue what I was doing. Just fun to watch and aim for the guys on low health!
Unfortunately I crashed out at that point and had to log anyway. Still a positive impression of things to come in Tier 4.

I still have my concerns as I continue with WAR. Obviously there are people playing 12+ hours a day. They are already level 40 and pimped out in purple/blue items. Bit of a no contest when I meet them.
Then there is the problem of performance. Latency is an issue and even with various tweaks and mods like BuffThrottle. There seems at times to be severe server lag. I'm hoping this is temporary as it will ruin the game if it continues. So frustrating when you ability doesn't cast because of lag.
Finally, and this is being address this week, the game has become a grind to level. Hoping the boost in XP for RvR and Quests will improve things or level 40 is going to take a long time!

If you don't get what WAR is about. Then I suggest you watch this Video from the Developers. Best explanation I've found of the campaign and really gets you thinking about the possibilities for a war this brings

I second Trashmans view play it don't listen to much to advise. Personally I am really enjoying it. I have no Q's loggind and my server is high pop. The key is the social aspect of the Game which I think is encourgaed by the scale of the RVR.

Queue's have gone down a lot on my server as well now. They were 500+ 2h+, they are down to 50ish now which is about 15m at peak time. I can live with that

Re: Does anyone play Warhammer online? Also, does anyone here like flight/chopper sim

That's good! I'm hearing good stuff about the lich king pre-release patch or something though too, so that is tempting me too I think in the end I will probably play neither lol, but I never know with this stuff. It only takes one weekend with no plans and someone telling me "Join us it's fun!" and I'm sucked in.

Fallout3 and FarCry2 are keeping me from jumping on to anything at the moment though.
