Far Cry 2, Spore, Crysis Warhead DRM - some simple questions

Completely sidestepping all of this whining about DRM preventing more than 5 installs etc, I have some simple questions:

When I uninstall any of the above, are all traces of said game/DRM protection removed. Do they install simply as an application or does this DRM install some dodgy drivers that are left post uninstall?
Do I risk the stability of my system by installing any of these?
I'm happy with the 5 install limit myself since I've never sold a game second hand anyway. I just don't want some crap that does me no benefit installed on my computer that makes sure my CD drive isn't emulated.
Yes, I am aware that part of the reason for this 5 install limit is so I don't need to insert the CD every time I want to play and TBH I like that

Depends on the scheme, if securom then no - they claim it's kept on so as not to create problems with other games using securom.

Do they install simply as an application or does this DRM install some dodgy drivers that are left post uninstall?
They install as drivers, I'm not qualified to verify your dodgy claim though.

Do I risk the stability of my system by installing any of these?
Usually no - in the rare cases where they do then you can usually update the drivers or they provide a fix directly. Same as most drivers.

I just don't want some crap that does me no benefit installed on my computer that makes sure my CD drive isn't emulated.
They don't normally stop CD emulation, just prevent some games from running if emulation is detected. But that depends on the scheme as well. The benefit is allowing you to play the games.

Me too - and actually the DRM that installs with online activation is usually lighter/less problematic than the type you have with older games that do check the disc. For instance the emulation thing is far less likely to be a problem than if you'd installed a game with a disc check.

They are no big thang. They either remove themselves when you uninstall, or you can just download a little tool that gets rid of it. I don't even think that is necessary anymore though, because the new ones are pretty good at removing themselves in the uninstall of the game.

The chance of having a problem after installing it, is like 1% or something. The exact figure you can find on Wiki I think, but it's barely more than a few percent, and of those, half of them probably just did something stupid like playing with their motherboard in the bath.

If you uninstall the game, it only leaves traces of Securom behind, and you can remove those manually be deleting the right folders and by using regedit. That should never have to be done by most people though. There are various guides how to do it online.

Oh come on Josh, I thought you'd grown out of doing this! You can't just pull out scaremongering stories without something to back them up. DRM does not slow down your PC and does not break your DVD drive.

The only evidence I've found that DRM has any effect is infact related to the OLD disk-check style DRM, not this online version. The old one could cause SOME cheap OEM drives to step down their DMA mode because of difficulty reading the watermark on DVDs. This is simply a software variable in the OS and is easily reset.

It does? How does it manage that? A little elf with a hammer jumps out and beats on the drive?

My PC is as fast as it was the day I bought it (in 2006) and I have installed dozens of games and never had to reinstall windows. My 3dmark score is no different than when I first ran it. And my drive still works fine. And my last PC wasn't any different, and that probably had to contend with more, with starforce and whatnot.

Far Cry 2 still asks for the damn disk! I actualy like Spore's DRM, purely for the fact I don't have to find the disk to play it.

Re: Far Cry 2, Spore, Crysis Warhead DRM - some simple questions

So does far cry 2 have an activation/install limit or is it disk based DRM?

I think this forum needs a sticky thread listing new games out and what kind of DRM they have, so those of us that hate over restrictive DRM can decide which games are OK to buy now. I'm not going to buy any games which are over restrictive, such as spore, until they relax the DRM on them like they did a year later with bioshock.
