Which older FPS do you reccomend?

I have recently come back to online gaming after a long hiatus of not doing any gaming at all.

Work took over my life but now with a new job i thankfully have some more time to myself.

I used to play (and love) Battlefield 2 and have recently been enjoying COD4 alot. However when i installed BF2142 i didn't really get on with it.

Which leads me to my point that which online FPS do people reccomend that i get? Which have stood the test of time? My PC spec is decent enough to run the latest games but i just want to know if there are any older games that are worth buying.

    I saw this:

    http://shop.lovefilm.com/lovefilm/9941845.product

And with the 10% discount at the moment it seems like good value.

    Is it worth getting?

    What about:

    Quake Wars
    Counter Strike Source
    Team Fortress

Any advice would be greatfully appreciated.

Half Life 2 - not so much online, but best older FPS by a mile (IMHO)

The Orange Box is around £17 at that site and includes CS:S, Team Fortress 2 etc.

If its multiplayer you want, I would suggest a BF2 mod called project reality : www.realitymod.com

    It rocks.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I will definitely be checking out the BF2 mod as i plan on blowing off the dust on my copy of BF2 tonight

So that deal on UT3 is not worth getting then?

If you do check out PR, make sure you drop by the .:iGi:. server (easily found in the server browser, just filter by .. We play most evenings and are really happy to have noobs tag along in our squads. I do recommend you read the manual first though as it is a very in depth mod, and stay away from sniper kits, helicopters and squad leader roles until you really get the hang of it. People don't appreciating you crashing a chopper full of people, especially given the asset respawn times. Its a great community, and I have to say, I LOVE PR!!!!

It does - but not sure if it's part of the box or you just download it over Steam.

UT3 has dissappointed a lot of people.. it just kind of lacks the zing of UT99 or UT2004. I can't put my finger on it really because it was quite good fun in bursts.

Another possible choice - gears of war. Not strictly speaking a FPS, but close enough for most.

    Indeed.

Spent way too many nights playing that with my friends.

"Slappers Only!" weapon mode was classic as was one shot kills with the Golden Gun.
