Exclamation What I think of Far Cry 2... So far!

Well hmm where do I begin... I'm about 40% through Act 1 now, and quite honestly I have to say the novelty of fixing up wounds and setting the savannah on fire is wearing off!

It really seems like Assassin's Creed underneith with an FPS exterior and moved to Africa. By no means is it a bad game, but it isn't blowing me away at all! Those that really enjoy an FPS for the unadulterated FPS action I think will love it, but it is a little reptitive and story is lacking so far. It seems their solution to games not being many hours long these days is to add a billion side-quests and random main-quests.

Haven't checked my played time but I think last time I checked it was about 9hours or so, and i'm not that far through! They're sort of using the RPG formula - do lots of quests to 'level up' in this case leveling up is getting to Act 2 after doing loads of main story quests.

Main story quests can be done for either of the factions at war - though I think since one of my buddies went 'missing' I can only do them for the faction my other buddy likes - not sure! I really wonder where my first buddy went though, he came and helped me when I was helping my other buddy! Not sure if they're friends themselves so maybe one killed the other and isn't telling me.

On the side you have arms dealer quests which don't give you any diamonds (the currency) but unlock weapons for you. I think I did three of these before there is no more for Act I. Then for some extra money you can do assassination quests which you receive from interacting with radio towers and then you get a creepy call from someone akin to the voice of Daedalus (DX) telling you who to liquidate. I think there was four of these to do for Act I.

I did more story quests after this and I must say I like the new buddy I met right from the start! An old eastern european sounding guy who was quite funny "Thank you, thank you! Right, I go now! Uh, don't die!". My other buddy who's saved me god knows how many times now is a young american gun-ho kinda guy.

The music in the game is a mix of.. I would say: Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, Predator and some African undertones in there. Heck I think the sound upon nearing a diamond briefcase is ripped straight from AC .

Graphics are absolutely gorgeous! And it runs great on "Very High", "Ultra High" with 4x AA is a bit too laggy for me, but I couldn't tell the difference from a quick look anyway - probably less agressive LoDing etc. Which by the way - is done brilliantly in this game. Sometimes even if you stare at a leaf and get closer to it, you don't notice it changing but it's a totally different shape by the time you're next to it! Very well done .

Re: What I think of Far Cry 2... So far!

I think im 10% through act 1, are your "buddies" ment to help you? like go with you for a mission? or is it just when your about to die they help you? Only had the latter so far. I like the size of the map but hate it at the same time, go to place A then you get there and they tell you to go place B which is all the way at the start, passing all the camps does my head in.

Graphically i havent seen anything great apart from the terrain, guns look pretty pants and online is worse(sniper looks BAD).

Think they just help you when you 'die', haven't had them come on a mission with me .

Re: What I think of Far Cry 2... So far!

I'm impressed with the graphics - my 8800 GT runs it with everything ultra high/no AA, at 1650 x 1050 (I haven't tried it at 1900x1200 yet).

Game play is fun, I was a little dissappointed it takes so many bullets to kill the enemy with but then I realised a single HS is enough to take them down, which is a very welcome change from Crysis.

Same problem with the origional far cry then really. Lots of shooting and blowing stuff up but the levels and the game just seem to go on and on.

eh ? Crysis is exactly the same 1 HS = 1 Kill, lots of bullets anywhere else.

    Not for me it wasn't?
I remember repeatedly hitting someone in the head, usually took 2 HS + bodyshots for them to go down.
I even remember a guy taking 3 once.

Crysis defo 1 to the head will drop a regular enemy. Even with a silenced pistol (within range of course). To take out another nano suit enemy with one HS you need gauss or maybe rifle.

I wanna get this farcry 2!

I'm quite liking it so far... I'm not so keen that everyone and their brother seems to want to kill you (or have I just pissed everyone off and not noticed?) and that most missions involve driving to the other side of the map, which means that you've got to bust through half a dozen checkpoints just to get there. Not to mention that anyone you drive past on the road instantly gives chase and opens fire if they're armed, doesn't anyone in the country not give a damn about you?

It was only like that on easiest difficulty and medium too (not including suited up gimps ) but any higher and people magically had bullet absorbing brains.

Still not sure I want to buy Far Cry 2. People seem to be half-heartedly saying it's good... with caveats. Is the fact that it's free-roaming more of a chore than a welcome addition? Does it bear any resemblance to STALKER, but with vehicles, as I loved that?

The Koreans took so many more hits on Normal in that, and they had no body armour and that was the gayest part of the game. They take so long to fricking die! Much easier to get a truck and mow them over than waste my bullets..

    Ubisoft Beats Pirates
    October 21, 2008 at 10:21 am (Life)

You read that right. Ubisoft + SecuROM successfully beat crackers this weekend with Far Cry 2. While the game was up for download days ago, as of posting time no crack has been found; a key gen has also not been created.

Word on the street is that this version of SecuROM is doing things differently. If you trust the comments at TPB, it seems that crackers may have not even figured out HOW to crack it.

    This just makes me sad.

    DRM that has worked?........

They've got a crack out.... Worked for a few days this time. I can't see how they'll be able to beat them apart from online exclusive content or multiplayer being the main reason for the game (CoD4, although Single Player was awesome and that's what the pirates get free..) or it being online all the time.
