All I have these days is a Sega Master System (with a few of the really good games - Power Strike, Kenseiden, Wonderboy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap, Fantasy Zone 2). I tend to play more stuff via emulators though (either on the PC or on my GBA)

i like looking at the emulators, but its not the same as having the original console looking at you. Ive got quite a collection of stuff now, still looking for some other bits though

I've got a Megadrive with CD and loadsa games (including Toejam and Earl which I just found at a boot sale), Neo Geo pocket (althought that's hardly retro) but my true love is the Sega Saturn for which I have a ton of games including nearly all the Jap-only Capcom fighters. I have two copies of Vampire Saviour, the second is a spare because I love the game so much. I also have Radiant Silvergun. In fact the only game I want which I don't have is Metal Slug, and I've probably left it too late for that. My main Saturn I modded (badly) with region switches and a 50/60Hz selector, I also have two brand new never used white Saturns (in white boxes) and a V-Saturn in my mum's attic. I should really sell one of the white ones, if anyone's interested PM me.

I'd love a cabinet or ten but first I need a bigger house. In fact I'm still toying with the idea of opening an arcade at some point- I can't believe that you wouldn't make a ton of money if you had a bunch of retro games and charged 10-20p a time instead of the 50p-£1 that most arcades round here want. Their machines hardly get played, I'm too tight to pay £1 for three minutes entertainment but I'd happily pay 20p five times!

SNES Emulator, all of Donkey Kong, plus some others some American guy sent me, I'll have to check that CD again, seem to remember lots of stuff on there. Good ROMS, probably

Only old gaming machines I ever had were a BBC Computer (Chuckie Egg was my favourite) and a Sega Megadrive. If only the Megadrive had a save function, I'd have probably kept it, I spent too many hours on that thing.

8-16bit console saves were dependant on the game, as some games had a battery & some ram on the cartridge itself for save games to go onto. the first one i can remember was the legeld of zelda on the nes - the rest at the time used mahoosive passwords or no continuity at all.

generally the snes games had more battery backup than the megadrive ones, not sure why nobody bothered.
