Well.... In general I'd agree that there are a lot of older games out there that are good and a lot of the newer games are complete pap.
But I'd also say that in the 16-bit era (Megadrive, SNES) there was also an awful lot of crud around (platform games mostly) and that there are still some bloody good new games out there - and this is just the stuff I've got sitting around:
Game Cube:
Ikaruga
Metroid Prime
Super Mario Sunshine
Viewtiful Joe
Zelda Wind Waker
PS2:
Capcom Vs SNK 2
Gran Turismo
Rez
And although a lot of the GBA games could be argued to be retro (i.e. some are conversions of older games and some are very much in the same format - basically update) there are some great games that are still new creations on the system such as:
Advance Wars 1 and 2
The Castlevania games (are there 3 or 4 of those now?)
Metroid Fusion / Zero Mission
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
WarioWare (a completely bonkers game)
Anyone with a GBA who's into retro gaming should get themselves a flash cart so that they can play Sega Master System, NES, PC Engine and Speccy games on it (and now even SNES games though the emulator is very slow at the moment)
Having said all that some of my fav. older games are:
Sega Master System:
Fantasy Zone 2
Kenseiden
Power Strike (AKA Aleste)
Wonderboy in Monster Land
Wonderboy 3 The Dragon's Trap
PC Engine:
Air Zonk
Bonk / PC Kid 1, 2 and 3
Bomberman (all of them)
Dracula X
Gates of Thunder and Lords of Thunder
R-Type (excellent conversion)
Star Soldier / Gunhed series
Amiga:
BC Kid (good conversion of Bonk / PC Kid on the PC Engine with better music)
Cannon Fodder
Disposable Hero
Dune II (yes it was a PC game too but I played it on the Amiga first)
Dynablaster (conversion of Bomberman on the PC Engine with 4 player support via parallel port adapter for 2 more joysticks)
Gods
Moonstone
Pinball Dreams / Fantasies / Illusions
Road Kill ("Super Jackpot!" in deep scary voice)
Rocket Ranger
Shadow of the Beast (just because it was so damn impressive at the time... 2 and 3 are pretty good games too)
Speedball 2
Stardust / Super Stardust (AGA update)
Super Cars II
Turrican 1 and 2 (3 is a pants conversion of a pants game - Mega Turrican on the Megadrive)
X-Out
As well as some of the older more classic stuff (Nebulus, IK+, etc) and a few games worth checking out just for the "How did they do that on such an old machine" factor:
Battle Squadron
Jim Power
Sword of Sodan
Unreal
i partially agree with you apart from one glaring mistake.
possibly THE worst mario game ever! but as far as the rest of the GBA/G3/P2 reccomendations you've made go, you obviously do have good taste really!Super Mario Sunshine

I love all the old Commodore 64 games. I have the origional 64 in the loft (The brown breeze block !) and around 3000 games on tape. They released new games for it each week and it was a mere £10.00 for a new release on tape ! My 64 is actually held together with Duc Tape as it had to be repaired a few times and the screws on the underside can't be screwed in !
I remember the first time they introduced loading music, it was immense. Also not forgetting when they also introduced the multiload system on games so they could do alot more to make a game bigger and better.
Many nights I sat up till at least 4 in the morning playing such classics as Retrograde (Thalamus) Last Ninja series (System 3) Hillsfar and the other D&D games (U.S Gold). I have so many fond memories of that great little machine !
I know a lot of people dislike Mario Sunshine but I still think it's a top game - but then I never had an N64 (or even played Mario 64) until after I'd played Mario Sunshine so I didn't have the direct comparison to make when picking it up. I now know that apart from FLUDD it's exactly the same game as the previous one but I still like it.Originally Posted by Bunjiweb

have to say, having played almost all the mario games, that sunshine isn't particularly good - it lacks any real sense of direction, has horribly frustrating pixel-perfect jumping, and the difficulty curve is somewhat jagged. mario 64, mario world, and mario 3 are the best the franchise has to offer.
I went out and bought a N64 just so I could play Golden Eye and Mariokart. I nalso seem to spend more time usisng maime than playing games like halflife etc.
I even managed to spend three hours playing the spectrum version of Rockstar Ate My Hamster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The game I am waiitng for is Rome Total War which hopefully will change my opinion of new games.
Specs:
Q6600 G0, Thermalright Ultra 120, ABIT IP35 PRO, 4GB Corsair DDR2, Trusty old Tagan 480u, BFG 8800 GTS 512, Samsung F1 750 GB.

Well I still like it. I really ought to play through Mario 64 though - you're not the first person to tell me it's better than Sunshine. TBH I never really got into Mario until Super Mario World (Mario Bros 4 / the SNES one that is) and have never really liked Mario 3 either (even though many people hold Mario 3 above Super Mario too). So I might just be the odd one out! Actually... My fav. Mario game is Donkey Kong on the gameboy...Originally Posted by directhex
There's also loads of older pc games. If you missed them when they were first out now is the time to try. They will also run real sweet on that latest game rigs, but since they are old even the lesser pcs will run them at great speed.
There is little financial risk (especially since you can return many games or trade them in gamestation) so you might as well try the genres you thought you didn't really like. I was not a massive flight sim fan but i am having a great time with IL2 - only 7.99 delivered from play.com!
Also consider:
Operation flashpoint (with two expansions for 7.99 from play)
Mobil 1 rally championship
GP3 or 4
Startopia
Planescape torment (bought it some time ago but never got round to playing it)
Serious sam
and countless others!
P.S. By the way, IL2 looks awesome with AA on and is smooth as silk
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.
bought Zelda 3, F-Zero & Flashback for my SNES today . Quality gaming or what!

You need to get a copy of panzer dragoon saga for your saturn if you have the spare money, but i've seen them go for 200 pounds plus cause they are damn rare. Its meant to be a fantastic rpg though.
The old games are classics, but what annoys me is the graphics....they just really hurt my head after a little bit of playying and i cant really get into them. Someone shoudl make exact copies of the games in newer graphics so it actually looks nice
| XP1600-m | ASUS AN78X Deluxe | r9700 pro | 2x512mb pc37000 |
i've looked for Panzer Dragoon but i cant find one for a good price anywhere.... I do have the Xbox version though
Blockers, graphics arent everything... i prefer good gameplay on a 2d view than crap 3d rubbish.

you cant beat f-zero and axelay on the snes, many hours playing those bad boys
I think your right about a lot of the games coming out lacking in the gameplay department, they're are re-doing a lot of the classics too - Midway's done a greatest hits : Midway Arcade Treasures with Gauntlet, Joust, Paperboy, Rampage, Marble Madness and Smash TV to name a few and there is Space Invaders but don't go anywhere near R-Type Final - played a demo and theres far too much fancy scroling and backgruond graphics
I'm really looking forward to this :
Hyper Street Fighter 2
A) it's the daddy
B) it's has the manga with it
Although I'm not looking forward to the thumb blisters
Other than that Gran Toursmo 4 (online) and Driver 3 (Driv3r) is the only other thing to tickle my fancy over the next 6 months or so.
