    Best (re-)introduction to gaming?

I'm re-building my PC, and so for the first time in years will have a rig capable of playing recent games. I want to have fun, rather than win tournaments, and I want to get cracking rather than spend ages learning how to play.

I know I like real-time strategy, and some first-person shooters (where the emphasis is on fun rather than fear or challenge).

What game(s) should I buy to enjoy my new set-up?

    Many thanks.

As 0iD said, Left 4 Dead is a smashing game, even more so if you go along with a friend who is a bit of a nutter and will randomly blast you and your allies to hell (Of course, you need to have the patience of a fair few restarts .

There is a little fear factor in there, although in my opinion it's no more fear than resident evil is.

    Re: Best (re-)introduction to gaming?

    Call of Duty 4

To be honest my love for gaming had dwindled a little, BF2 is a great game at all, but without having a decent singleplayer it's pretty much useless at the moment.

The variety and engrossing nature of CoD4, as well as the gameplay, visuals etc all add up to a great game!

    BUY IT!!!

    Re: Best (re-)introduction to gaming?

    Black and White is good.
Black and White 2 is alright, but worse imho. Didn't like second one so much.

I'm planing on getting orange box, so I'll +1 to that.
Quake 4 is ridiculously easy, even on hardest. Only struggled on it once, and that was because I misunderstood what I was supposed to be doing.

Not this . It's ok for a 'fling' but its not that great an RTS. Company of heroes is good but showing it's age now.

For FPS I would say buy the Orange Box first thing, or in fact just get Valve's complete pack for $100 at the minute - every game they've ever made including the orange box games, all the half life games, left 4 dead and so on.

For the RTS there has been a dry spell recently - C&C Generals was probably the 'best' recent C&C game but C&C3 is very playable for fun - just don't expect to enjoy playing it online vs. people who spam one tactic on one map and win.

Also if you can get a demo or something have a look at Supreme Commander - new take on RTS but if I'm honest I think it gets a bit boring after you get over the 'wow its so big!' phase. Not reinstalled it after first play through to completion really.

CoD4 and C&C Generals - I found as a newbie CoD kept me occupied long enough to actually be able to kill someone!

    RA3 is a bit disappointing.

Supreme Commander Gold (which is the original game + the expansion pack). Check the website www.find-games.co.uk for cheapest prices on all the games, you should be able to get Supreme Commander Gold for about £11

The community is fairly experienced on the whole, but there's plenty of new players as well. Excellent modding community and Supreme Commander 2 has been announced a couple of weeks ago

It plays different to other RTS games, and is better for it in my opinion. The game once learned is much more tactical and varied than your tank rush commander and conquer type games.

Edit: Probably my favourite user made video showing the game in action - it's immense!
