    Freeloading the Wii

Whats the skinny on the Wii Freeloader discs? Do they still run on latest firmware?
Basically, we got a PAL Wii when we were in the UK, and now we are NOT in the UK, and most games in stores here are NTSC...So is it worth my while getting this Freeloader disc to allow me to play? Or is it a dud now?

If its to do with the Wii's firmware, how do I check what firmware version I'm on?

    Thanks!

    Re: Freeloading the Wii

Apparently you can also software modify the Wii to play DVDs, it has the capability just Nintendo didn't want to pay out for a decoder licence for that many objects - But I haven't done it myself even though I read it as fairly easy cos of the potential to interfere with official updates to the firmware (I know the freeloader CD thing doesn't modify software, but related kinda thing)

AFAIK, one of the updates killed the freeloader...

    edit: aye, they did

    Re: Freeloading the Wii

    Whoa! What does this mean?
    http://gaming.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=14230

So if I go the Freeloader route, I can ONLY play old games? Or I can only play old PAL games, but ALL NTSC games?

So would it be better to get it chipped/modded to support other region's games? Is that even legal?

aye its crazy isnt it. Nintendo would rather force you closer to piracy by getting a machine modchipped then allowing you to play legit games that you got abroad due to nintendo europe being terrible for releases compared to other countries.

I think I remember the DVD player trick I mentioned above needing you to buy that gay zelda game, oh well guess I was right about not trying it. Wonder if there's a new trick out there already though, probably.

It's down to DVD encoding IIRC

The DS is region free, the N64 had no issues with imports depending on the country of the console so it's not all bad for them

And you have a grey import technically, same for an imported 360 or ps2......... just buy a new one, you'll get most of your money back I reckon and get one for the region you are in.

I paid almost 70 quid for smash brothers and the freeloader for my sons birthday. then shortly after they block it. Im just not going online with the wii. This means they wont get me buying any more games for their console. Most of all the big franchises have already launched and there is nothing im desperate for in the future. Even games i am kind of tempted with will get left on the shelf as i buy for my 360 instead. I wont go down the mod chip path and they potentially lose a lot of games sales (have over 60 xbox 360 games and only 10 wii games). Its their loss in the long run and it just makes me love my 360 more.
