So what's the deal? I didnt play the first one (unfortunately), although I heard a lot of good things about it. Is Deux Ex 2 as poop as everyone is making out, or is it worth picking it up?

:: of all the things i've lost i miss my mind the most ::
remember deus ex 1? and how you enjoyed the multiple paths, the depth it gave to the game, its XP system integrating RPG elements to the game, and the vast range of bio-mods that you could install?
Now look at deus ex 2. The interface has firstly been completely re-designed so that it managed to block out part of the middle of the screen, leaving the edge perfectly clear for you to admire the pretty and insignificant screen edges. Why? I will explain in a min. Then you look for the XP system. You look again, and you keep looking. You can't find it. Guess why? its gone. Well atleast there will still be a range of biomods. Oh, wait, theres only half as many as before; and only about half are useful giving you an effective choice of 10 mods.... Finally the thing that was probably one of the best features of DX1, the many ways you could approach a level, and how it affected the overall game. In DX2 multiple paths still exist, but not to the same magntitude. You can still approach situations in different ways (eg via fighting or sneaking) but it has very little impact on the game, and there are'nt as many paths to choose from.
These are just my (and many thousands of others, just read the DX2 forums) main gripes with the game and theres only one thing to blame.
the XBOX
this game has been completely XBOXED - ie dumbed down for Xbox users. Its not a game designed for the PC. the interface in DX1 was brilliant. There was plenty of space on the screen to see what you were doing, it game you all the infomation you needed in a simple and clear way as opposed to the confusing method now used. The XP system was also deemed to be too complex for Xbox users. This is a fair point but this *should* have been a PC game converted for Xbox, not the other way round
Seriously do not waste your money on this thing, buy a decent game instead.
Lets just hope that they dont do the same to thief 3![]()
PS, sorry for the rant but this is one thing that really pisses me off, mirosoft aint content with monopoly on the OS market, now they want to actaully ruin PC gaming too...
I've played the demo, not the full game, and I have to agree with all of Spud's points - and I'll add one more; if you're thinking of buying it, you'd BETTER have an nVidia card; I ran the demo on an Athlon XP2400@2.083GHz (FSB @333), 512MB PC3200 and a Radeon 9700 non-pro. It ran like dog poo, and that was with the latest drivers. It's obviously an Xbox design (tiny little levels, frequent map loads, consoley interface) and they haven't done any real work to make it suitable for PC.
Yeah, that's just what I suspected. I'm a bit concerned about all the games that are now being dumbed down for the console market. I might give it a go when it gets cheaper, but I cba at the moment. If there's one thing I dont like, it's games that lack depth.
it does actaully run quite well with the latest patch, i get an average of 40fps with my PC, but it doesnt make the game any more fun to play![]()
I've only got a gf ti4200, I think i need to upgrade soon![]()
can I point out that Deus Ex: Invisible War hasn't been XBoxed, it's been dumbed down. Deus Ex 1 was ported to Playstation 2 as Deus Ex: The Conspiracy to mild commercial success. It included an interface with many elements similar to DE:IW, and played fairly well on a gamepad, but didn't loose any of the best features such as the experience, staggered biomod useage, inventory & ammo management, etc. The game wasn't dumbed down, it was merely tweaked for console use, and in no way left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans of the PC version.
DE:IW wasn't dumbed down because of the XBox. It was dumbed down because the real people who buy games prefer something easy to something complex (part of why DE:IW is so much shorter than DE as well). If complex games sold, they would have made DE:IW closer to the original.

I dont agree either that it was dumbed down for the Xbox. I firmly believe that it was released as it is for commercial cash rather than a gaming experiance.
It was sad though as I enjoyed the first one. Where as IW has no replay value to me what so ever, but this shouldnt have come as a shock to most games players as apart from a handful of games nearly all releases over the last couple of years have been hyped to death, then they hit the streets and everyone finds out that the game offers somewhere between 6-12 hours of gameplay.
And that is a trend that will continue. With development costs going through the roof and the graphics hardware manufacturers releasing every more powerful GFX cards every 6 months the gaming public demanding expect the latest games to look and sound astonishing. And this usually comes at the cost of imaginitive level design and lenght of game as its not possible to include that in the development cost of design.
well we are all entitled to our opinion i guess, but i stand by my statement about the Xbox, its a console for people who can't afford or cope with a PC pure and simple. If they wanted just a console a PS2 or GC would be a better choice... Yes my implication is that ppl who do buy an xbox dont have much intelligence, but that is just MY OPINION. Its also not going to be true for everyone who buys one, i am generalising based on ppl i know with them and what ive been reading in various forums online.
flame away if y ou want but thats my opinion on the matter
i've had the american version since late december and can say that if the original deus ex weren't released, it would have been a dream come true, but because it was co-developed for xbox (co-developed being developer jargon for a game being made soley for the console market but the leftovers to converted for the pc market later on) its just another slightly open-ended game...
I recieved the game yesterday, played it and was shocked how extremely slow it ran..
Have found this program DXIW tweaker
http://www.deusexzone.info/downloads...IW_Tweaker.exe
And now the game runs very well, im actually getting into it, just hope it is not too short though, the first one is definetly the best
Only £17.99 from www.play.com, so not too shabby![]()
