    Fraps, Virtualdub and Youtube

    Hi,

I've been putting some game videos up recently using a combination of Fraps and VirtualDub.

I only have 192Kbps upload so the file size needs to be reasonable, and I also want the video to be 16:9 so it fits a YouTube video nicely.

Currently I'm using the XviD codec with pretty much default settings & the target size set to 60MB. However, my 5 minute video came out at 111MB - the size and quality are fine, but the file would take hours to upload, and I don't really like the idea of having to specify the target file size.

Basically I'm looking for some settings that will just make the video small enough so it doesn't take years to upload without having to specify a target file size.

    Thanks,
    Craig.

    Re: Fraps, Virtualdub and Youtube

Try using a x.264 codec to compress it

    Re: Fraps, Virtualdub and Youtube

I'll give it a go, thanks

    [Edit]
I'm guessing I can just use x264 through the ffdshow compression interface within VirtualDub?

    Re: Fraps, Virtualdub and Youtube

I encoded the video at 300Kbps using the two passes with X264. It's a 5 minute video and came out at 60MB, I was expecting a lot more quality from a 5 minute 60MB video .

Are there any particular settings I need to be looking at to optimize the quality and size?

    Thanks,
    Craig.

    [Edit]
Sorted, I had forgotten to encode the audio . My 5 minute video is now 25MB with the exact same quality as the 60MB version

Thanks for the x264 suggestion biscuit

What audio compression did you use? And what resolution is the FRAPS footage?

128Kbps with LAME MP3 for the audio.
Fraps footage is 1920x1080 (used to be 1920x1200, but I've changed it since)

I've now set the games I want to record at 1920x1080 (16:9) so they fit the YouTube video area perfectly. I use the resize filter in VirtualDub to make the video 640x360 (16:9, YouTube size) and usually use 500Kbps quality which seems to be pretty decent for YouTube. Video is compressed using X264 as suggested above.

My latest one (SLIGHT FARCRY 2 SPOILER IF YOU'RE NOT IN SOUTHERN DISTRICT YET): http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=d_3_FpaWqI4 - best viewed in high quality. Filesize was 3.8MB and it looks fairly good.

Make sure you watch the above in high quality, the difference is huge. Unfortunately YouTube's compression is a pile of **** - excuse the language, but it is.

    Craig.

Handy to know the correct resolution, so it fills the entire window in low and high quality detail view.

I was wondering about using half-size feature in FRAPS. Don't know if that would create a better end result than VirtualDub resizing it. But playing the game in 1280x720 on a 20" or larger monitor (can do 1:1 on mine) is not appealing.

    Re: Fraps, Virtualdub and Youtube

Depends what game your playing. A lot of games allow you to record and then playback using the game engine so you could play full res, record in game then play it back and record halfsize.
