    Supreme Commander & FA freezes

    Howdy,
Been a long time lurker here, and decided I should finally sign up

First of all, sorry if this has been posted in the wrong section. I looked for an rts section as I found the War room but could not find it. Mods, please move if this has indeed been posted in the wrong forum.

    Right, on to the problem.

I have been a long time Supreme Commander player who also enjoys Forged Alliance. Recently however I have started experiencing game freezes about 20-25 mins into the games. The game will freeze however I will still be able to move the mouse around and alt-tab out to end the game process from Task Manager.

This problem occurs in both SC and FA but not in any other games. All other games I play (of which there are plenty) run fine.

PC spec is: Q6600 @ 3.61ghz, 2 x 2GB OCZ reaperx, Asus P5e, 2 x HD4870's (have tried playing with crossfire enabled and disabled = same result), 2 x 36GB raptors in RAID 0. Im running the latest drivers for all hardware and latest bios for the mobo. I have yet to try the 9.1 betas that seem to be floating around the net for the 4870's but I think I'll stay away from those for the time being.

Using Core Temp I know that my cpu never goes above 65 degrees C on full load and my gfx cards are also more than adequately cooled.

I have tried the CoreEnhancer program that MadBoris developed for the SC community without much success to this problem, and both SC and FA are fully patched up.

I am going to try and go back to 8.10's tonight and then work my way up but I would really appreciate a hand with this problem.

    Many thanks in advanced.

    Schnipps.

    OS?

CoreEnhancer won't do much for this, in fact, it would probably only make the problem worse.

    Likely suspects are:
Graphics cards - despite you thinking the temperatures are fine they might still be a problem - try underclocking.

Running out of memory address space on 32bit OS - highly likely with 2 cards and a memory hungry game like SC (I've not seen any other game come close). Try removing a card.

Process running out of allocated address space on 32 bit OS - also quite possible, though usually only occurs on larger maps. I think it was MadBoris again, though might have been someone else, who created a hack to switch the SC executable to large address aware (>2gb) - you then might need to modify the boot ini of your OS to reduce the memory reserved for hardware allocations and increase that available to processes - again with 2 gfx cards you're very likely to run into problems doing this, so I recommend removing one of them.

Sound - SC is very heavy on the sound buffer. Try disabling the sound card completely to see if it helps. If so, you can try enabling it but turning off hardware acceleration. Update drivers too.

Anti-virus interfering - can happen, especially with free ones like AVG.

    Hi kalniel,
    Thank you for your reply.

Please pardon my negligence. I run Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

If I have understoond MadBoris's post on the SupCom forum, one does not need to amend the boot.ini file if one has a 64 bit OS.

I will disable my sound card (X-Fi Audio PCI-e) when I get home and will let you know how that goes.

I'll also disabled Kaspersky and see if that helps.

Thank you very much for your advice so far

Re: Supreme Commander & FA freezes

Turns out the problem was the remnants of a mod I had installed a while ago. One of the Unit mods had been removed, but was still showing in the mods options. After having removed all of it, FA now runs fine
