Re: Dawn of War II beta started

No Dawn of War 2 is massively changed. It's more about squad's, not base building.

Looking forward to it as DOW has to be respected for its fun in multiplayer

Hoping DOW2 is going to be as much fun.

I thought the multiplayer was about base building but the campaign is squad based?

Kinda agree on the camera focus, after playing supreme commander it's annoying not to be able to get a good overview of the map without having to squint at a mini-map. There was a mini-mod for the first Dawn of War that allowed you to zoom out though, so if that was your only reason for not playing it I think you missed out

The multiplayer on the beta has almost no base building. You start with your headquarters (plus a turret or two) and you need to capture power nodes for, well .. power , and you build power stations around those. Then depending on which hero type you choose you can have the choice of building turrets and that's your lot!
Much more streamlined, much more combat orientated imo.

Re: Dawn of War II beta started

Anyone else get the error " failed to dump file " error 183"? It happens pretty much every other game(1 is fine 1 breaks). Its a great game but the beta shows the shortcomings of the AI and just in general, i killed a carnifex with a few squads without it attacking me because i was simply to far away, this wasnt snipers it was just the average squad so without it attacking is pretty bad, i can beat the computer on expert on ani or take and hold, i should be struggling at expert so it needs to be harder certainly. Graphics are not as good as they seemed when you go closer up(looks pretty crap) but at a distance they look quite nice so its very acceptable, more demanding than company of heroes so prepare for laggy games.

Yes, some parts will just freeze almost even if it was a smaller battle then a previous one 5mins ago it will lag more!. Im guessing its purely a software issue, i sense the game will run best on nvidia cards since they sponsor it(why cant they just stop bribing companies, ati win on grid without trying lol) so expect drivers to help soon.Turn off post processing if its constantly bad as thyat will give u a huge fps increase with a bit of a drop in colours(not bad for fps gained though)

Can't say I've noticed any performance issues myself. I can't check the exact settings as I'm not near my computer this week but I'm running at 1680x1050 with most of the texture settings at 'High'.

Re: Dawn of War II beta started

Had a couple of goes of this last night, only against CPU AI mind. I am a bit dissapointed really.

The squad levelling up seems to grant no benefits other than say extra health, there are few upgrades you can do with your troops.

The movement of most of the squads seems really slow and my squads seemed to get supressed far to easily.

Capturing points seems to quick and trying to destroy the opponents base i.e on annihilation is very very difficult.

Am i missing something, just seems I have very little to do, once you get your squads dug in at possitions it seems hard to shift them

Re: Dawn of War II beta started

I had some of the same reservations on my first couple of games but they made some sense after playing a little longer.
With the points easier to capture (and now that you can't put turrets on them) I found it made the games much more fluid. You need to have good map control to stop your enemy (a human one at least) running around and de-capping your points, even if you've just won the first skirmish or so.

The headquarters are much tougher but then you only have the one buidling now so I guess compared to taking out a whole base in the previous games (HQ, barracks, 2 special buildings, X power gens ..) it's probably about the same.
It also stops you getting taken out with a cheap Tech 1 rush as you really need to use anti-building units to do the job.
As for shifting dug in units, I thought it was a pain in the arse at first (especially as one of my mates is a turtling turret whore ) but I think it's great that turrets now have a limited field of fire and once I figured out the right counter units for particular enemy units the balancing seemed much better.
Some stuff does seem to need a bit of balancing though, The ranged units on the eldar seem a bit insane and 3 sqauds of space marine assault squads using the jump-pack ability can destroy most infantry a little easily.

Re: Dawn of War II beta started

Having played a bit more, I have started to enjoy it more.

There are still aspects I dislike, vehicles seems a little too strong and it seems a rush to get to tech level 3 at your HQ to obtain them.

Playing against human opponents is a completely different ball game and one I have so far enjoyed.

One of the good things is you can never keep still there is always something going on

Re: Dawn of War II beta started

You certainly get more enjoyment the more you play it. Its alot more fun when your with mates on skyped or something, we seem to be on a winning streak with about 6 wins. 1 is spacemarine defense(turrets) other is orks (offensive) and iam tyranids with ambush(that commander rapes). With our races i can counter any dreadnaught/tank that comes at our defenses with a T1 unit, i had 1 ripperswarm and 2 warrior broods(upgraded at T2 with claws for more dmg) and i killed a dreadnaught before it had a chance to hit me, rippers are very good at confusing a target .

I think eldar need a bit less dmg as their guardian squads do alot, space marines need to get terminators from their building not a commander skill and orks are missing the squigguf(cant spell) that green monster thing with turrets, that would of been fun .

The best price for pre-order is over at www.game.co.uk £24.99 for the steelbook edition including extra war gear and paint.

I have played quite a bit now with my mate in 2v2's and the stats dont seem to want to updte which is a shame. Overall I am impressed though I haven mainly played SM I have just started to tinker with eldar who have the 1000 requisition beast thing which is just AWESOME!
