Thanks, thats really interesting, quite like MAME then but on a far far bigger scale!
I wonder though whether the legal eagles at the game companies will stop efforts to emulate there particular software / hardware? Emulations as a whole is illegal? Some loopwhole though I think is along the lines of if you own the original hardware / software its okay?
I can see there being legal problems somewhere down the line, they are talking about emmulating operating systems, hardware setups etc etc... massive undertaking.
But they are also talking about games as heritage so if it has the right kind of public funding and promotion it could give game developers some good publicity if they cooperate... have to wait and see how they approach the whole thing.

That has always been false. ROM sites only put that on their websites to try to justify themselves and make the downloaders feel better about doing it.
I have no idea what the specific law was so I won't go into more detail, but I do know it's not true that owning the original makes it ok to download ROMs.
