    V-Sync

Can anyone describe what the V-Sync option in games does - I understand it has something to do with limiting the fps to the monitor refresh rate, but what exactly is it for? Also, when should it be used, if ever? What happens if it's activated on a game that normally runs below the monitor refresh rate?

    Re: V-Sync

I've tried Google, I just don't seem to get any useful information back. I wouldn't ask if I could find a simple answer on Google - searching often leads to contradicting opinions and know no better than when I started. That's why I ask here - for people's opinions. No need to be sarcastic.

    Re: V-Sync

Hmm..I just googled for "V sync" and hit the wikipedia entry straight away. The wikipedia entry is short but makes sense to me.

    Re: V-Sync

I've read the Wikipedia article and it makes perfect sense - doesn't bring me any closer to knowing when/if to use it though, that's what I posted here for. If you are just going to be sarcastic and post random links off Google, don't bother.

    Re: V-Sync

There's not much more to explain about it than what you can read on wikipedia. When you are done reading about V-sync, click the link within the text about page tearing.

Tearing will normally happen on LCDs when the frames per second are higher than the LCD refresh. V-sync will just lock the frame rate so it doesn't go higher to prevent the tearing. EDIT: I should say it is not limited to LCDs but it is most common with them.

As for things like double and triple buffering, it can make the game you're playing play smoother when used together with V-sync. However buffering requires a lot more V-RAM to work, if the game is already maxing RAM space out then the performance might end up dropping.

    Re: V-Sync

I use VSync all the time as I can't stand screen tearing. Using Triple Buffering with it helps negate the performance hit (best way to enable Triple Buffering in Direct3D/DirectX games is to use D3DOverrider, IMO).

    Re: V-Sync

triple buffering increases input lag though.. but i guess you don't notice it

v-sync is most useful on lcds because most of them if not all can only update at 60hz

    Re: V-Sync

I only use vsync on games that need it - I've come across a fair amount that seem ok without it. I also turn it off alot more now that my PC is getting old, as it'll usually lower the frame-rate a bit more to keep things in sync (i.e. if refresh rate it 60, other rates in sync would be 30, 15 and so on.... halved every time, which isn't a good idea with my weak graphics card!)
