    Best football game?

Me and my cousin love football, and we played many games of it.

SWOS, ISS Deluxe, ISS 64 and a few fifa games + others.

Although SWOS is a timeless game, the one we play most now is Fifa 05 and to be honest, we can't find another footy game that we can get on with (even though Fifa 05 still has its faults at times). Maybe now we are stuck in our ways... but then again, if you find a game which you like, why change?

    Re: Best football game?

I haven't enjoyed a FIFA game since World Cup 2002... which was frustrating because it only had national teams, great game mind. FIFA 99 was fantastic as well, spent many a night up with mates playing that until early hours.

Recently every time I've played FIFA I've been disappointed... I don't really care about graphics or realism as much as I care about the ball going where I want it to, and at the correct speed. Nothing is more irritating than pulling off a fantastic run all the way down the wing, hitting the cross button, and then watching the guy hoof it into the crowd as if you wanted him to clear the ball.

yeah i'll definately agree with you on that one. 09 looks good, plays a lot better than the previous ones and has a load more options, still would like to see a proper training mode tho (freekick walls etc)

I bought Sensible Soccer 2006 and found that was pretty good. Perhaps not as good as the original (or my expectations about games have changed) but still had the same fast flowing gameplay.

I love watching football, playing real football, and I do like football managerial games but I seem to be one of the few people who hate playing football games, I dont see the appeal, and I dont enjoy it.

You don't enjoy it because they are, on the whole, pretty rubbish. The same applies to basketball and american football games. If you spend enough time watching and playing the real thing, when you get into the digitised version with all those pre-rendered animations repeating and repeating, and seeing things like Arjen Robben being outrun by a scrub left-back, you just grow jaded.

My favourite footie game ever must be Fifa 99, it was also my 2nd footie game ever, thus I wasn't as troubled by the perpetual issues in sports games. What needs to be recognised is that ISS had the football gaming formula down back in 2001, but everyone had to moan about the graphics. So we've spent the past few years just polishing up the polygon counts and crowd effects instead of improving the game engines, which as I say are pants.

The best footie game requires: realistic physics, players who are identifiably different in skill and ability, the opportunity for the player to create strategic holes in the defence without exploiting some predictable AI behaviour, and the balance necessary for the AI to be able to maintain possession for longer than a few seconds without it seeming prescient about what you are going to do. If all those things were present, we could play with wireframe footballers and it wouldn't matter a lick. Down with graphics, long live gameplay

We found that we haven't enjoyed any Fifa game or PES, thats why we stuck with fifa 05. I've played fifa 09 a little, it seems ok, one thing i have noticed on the manager side is it has a fair bit of detail, but on a game like fifa i don't want a to much detail in off the field stuff. A good transfer system and a fair amount of formation options do me fine, other stuff like contracts to me is too much, if i want all that i'll play Football Manager. A quick search and getting Kaka to play in the same side me and my cous in our Derby County squad suits us fine. lol

    Re: Best football game?

Old school iss were without a doubt the best games, never the best looking, not even at the time and every game differed to the last, they had the tactical side to the game spot on, both fifa and pes really are trying to hard to make players run and move fluidly and forget year on year that player positions is what really makes a game, every year when I buy pro evo and in the last two years fifa too, i find myself bored after but a few weeks because they once I find a route to goal the game becomes pointless, even online where the same move workks 9 out of 10 times, the late 90's were truely the golden days, my original playstation has unfortunately recently passed away and my eyes have became adjusted to the smooth pixels of the modern games. but football games are just games that's what folk should remember.

Same here, but I recently went out and bought Fifa 09. I had no choice, ALL my friends either play Fifa or PES and a stage came where I had enough of being thrashed by them. Strangely enough the last football game I played properly was sega worldwide soccer on the saturn

I still prefer the real thing any day.

    Re: Best football game?

Fifa '95 on the megadrive was epic! You could have indoor games where the keeper occassionally threw the ball straight into the oppositions net! ISS on the 64 was great for its time, the mis-spelt names were a giggle. More recent times PES 5 or 6 with a decent superpatch installed is probably my favourite in terms of longevity. PES2009 isnt bad, big improvement over '08 and FIFA09 for the PC is utter dross. Don't have a console anymore so can't get 'next-gen' fifa but I've heard good things and its even converted many a die hard PES fan...DOn't know why FIFA don't just make their PC version the same as the next gen console 1, seems silly to me.

Depends. If by real thing you mean playing in Europes top teams in the finest stadiums for a fortune a week, no one, if on the otherhand you mean making a fool of yourself at your local pitches in the wind driven rain, plenty.
"The less you eat, drink and buy books; the less you go to the theatre, the dance hall, the public house; the less you think, love, theorise, sing, paint, fence, etc., the more you save – the greater becomes your treasure which neither moths nor rust will devour – your capital. The less you are, the less you express your own life, the more you have, the greater is your alienated life, the greater is the store of your estranged being." Karl Marx
