CS, lag spikes = very annoying!!

    Right all,

Recently I've been getting these horrid lag spikes in CS. It freezes up for about 2seconds and by the time I'm out of it I'm normally dead!

My netgraph looks like this when the spikes occur....

I normally have around 120fps in CS but the picture shows 62. I run a 2.26ghz P4 with 768 RAM and a GF4 Ti4800SE graphics card - connected to the internet with NTL 512k broadband.

    My config reads this:

    View Config Here

Anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening??

    Thanks in advance!

    Nick

pretty sure the hl engine is limited to 100fps, which again is limited by your refresh rate...

anyhow, i kept getting stupid lag whenever anything useful happened on screen (ie a CT ran around the corner, i just froze and by the time it had stopped lagging i was dead... *sigh*), i reinstalled steam and it is currently all fine, you might want to try that?

also make sure nothings uploading - ie i also had seti@home set to auto-transmit, which isnt useful in the middle of a game of CS..

Nothings using the internet when I am playin CS... only STEAM.

I would re-install STEAM, but I'd have to download all the updates :-/ Is there anyways around this?

CS is limited to 100fps, but if you replace the .dll file it uses to process the gfx with the one from your gfx card's drivers, it uses your gfx cards fps capabilities instead

i.e. if you had a Radeon 9000 pro it would have about 300 fps

    oh btw...

    Step 1 = Detonator (nvidia) cards : nvoglnt.dll
    ATI cards : atioglxx.dll
    Standard cards : opengl32.dll
    Decide what card u have..

Step 2 = go into windows/system32, and find the .dll which matches ur graphics card.copy it.

    Step 3 = Go to \Steam\SteamApps\email@email\counter-strike\gldrv\
In there delete the 3dfxgl.dll and paste the one u have just copied in.

Step 4 = Open the drvmap.txt document in there and change it to
    gldrv/Whatever ur driver name is
    Mine looks like this

    Default Default
    gldrv/nvoglnt.dll

Step 5 = create an autoexec.cfg if u have not already got one.
If u ain't got one and need one priv me and i'll tell you how.
    In the autoexec.cfg file type
    Developer 1

    Step 6 = Open ur config.cfg and change the fps_max to fps_max 400.

    All done.
When u go into game the autoexec.cfg should execute
    and watch ur fps rise.
All machines and cards are different so all fps's will be .
    Or you could try...

fps_max 200 in your console and type developer 1 in your autoexec.cfg

Do you mean your screen totally locks up for a few seconds?

I had this when I used to play CS, never worked out why (was on a Ti4800SE as well). But after STEAM banned me from using modifyed GFX drivers I left.
