    TAGES and Windows 7

Hi Guys. I bought "The Witcher" yesterday (cheap at Zavvi - hate to see them go under but every cloud etc.) and got home eager to have a look at what they'd done with the Aurora engine (I'm a big NeverWinter fan), only to be horribly disappointed when the TAGES anti-copy protection point-blank failed to work on Windows 7 Beta.

I've had a google around and have so far been unsuccessful in finding any suggested (preferably legal) workrounds for this issue, but my google-fu is notoriously weak , so I was wondering if anyone here had heard / seen / done anything with respect to running TAGES-protected games on 7 beta ?

If not I can always set up dual-boot with XP, but it'd be nice to not have that much hassle

    Re: TAGES and Windows 7

If I were you I would carry out all necessary steps to get it to work (legal or otherwise) since I had paid for the software. I would not even consider setting up a dual boot just to deal with some DRM. Of course Tages is not supported under a beta OS, so you cannot expect it to work, but if there was no fixed version available from the interwebs I'd take it back to Zavvi forthwith.

    Sorry I can't help with a solution

    Re: TAGES and Windows 7

Well the game doesn't support windows 7 beta either, so not the retailers fault that it's not working.

I'd highly advise against using any 'fixes' you might find on the interweb for getting around tages.

    Re: TAGES and Windows 7

Thanks for the views guys. I have to say I have no massive quibble with TAGES or MS over the lack of 7beta support - I knew the risk I was taking when I bought it! I find DRM both annoying and insulting, and wish software houses would simply charge a reasonable price for their software (which IMNSHO would be the best protection against piracy). I honestly don't think that people who would play a pirated copy of The Witcher are going to buy a copy just because it's DRM protected. I guess I'll just wait until 7 gets TAGES support...

I had a similar problem with FM2009 which I bought from Steam - the UniLoc activation software just plain wouldn't play under W7, so I'm back with Vista.

    FYI -
The 1.5 patch (to be applied after the 1.4 patch with the appropriate language pack) will remove all copy protection requirements from the Witcher... I am playing the game on Windows 7 (64 bit) without any problems. Enjoy!

Amazing what can happen over the course of nearly 9 months
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

Scaryjim... How far have you actually got with it? does it install? also what version do you have? (enhanced or the original release). If you can install it ok, install the enhanced packages (if necessary) and then get the latest update because it removes the copyright protection and the need for the disk in order to run the game. I had it running fine under windows 7 RC. I now have home premium and can try later today if that helps?

    Re: TAGES and Windows 7

Cool, thanksx for the input guys

I've not tried to get Witcher running recently due to a house move and still having not sorted by study out (bad jim ) but I have run another TAGES protected game on my HTPC with WIn 7 RC and it worked fine - they've finally released Win 7 drivers. Hopefully I'll get off my lazy rear end soon and get back to doing some gaming (if that's not too much irony in one concept ), at which point I'll fire up Witcher again and see how it goes.

That said, now Dragon Age has hit the shelves Witcher might have some competition...

Same.. but only because I've played through The Witcher about four times now. DA:O is not *quite* as good as The Witcher IMHO, but close.
