Question Stonking new system, nothing to use it for!

As per my system spec. I've had it since the beggining of January and I'm yet to find anything worthwhile to push it (aside from the odd bit of encoding).

I'm a fan of FPS and RTS, but only casual and single player (due to a massive 'addiction' to WoW, long complicated story), mainly because of what I consider a lack of decent games. I've been playing a lot of older games recently and I feel my huge (for me) payout wasn't worth it.

I've played COD:WaW, Left For Dead, and Fallout 3. None of which seemed particularly amazing, with Fallout 3 being the only one I bothered to complete.

I've enjoyed playing with Vista (first bluescreen in nearly 3 months, wasn't even doing anything, box was idle). Also gave VMware a try whilst attempting to get some none Vista-compatable hardware to work.

The only thing I've been looking forward to is SF4, but why bother waiting 3 months longer than console users?

I basically use my hugely overpowered gaming PC as a media centre, and that worries me. Please restore my faith in PC gaming and suggest a recent game that will be brilliant (and makes my system sweat, tryed the usual suspect of Crysis etc)!

Copy all your DVD's to hard drive and convert them, that will get the system sweating. I would start overclocking, and just trying some highly rated games, such as assassins creed.

Re: Stonking new system, nothing to use it for!

GRAW 2 is pretty intense on the graphics and is an awesome game to boot!! As is Rainbow Six Vegas 2.

Possibly give Mass Effect a shot, its like a third person shooter with RPG elements.

Cryostasis seems to be crippling a lot of PC's at the min, got it installed but havn't had a chance to play yet except the first few mins. Runs OK in medium / high settings in 1024x768 res on my 7900 GS.

Dead Space is another pretty intense visual game. If you like survival horror then you'll love this. Imagine Res Evil meets Event Horizon and you are there!!! Its easier to play on a joypad though. This game crippled my PC unless I knocked shadow details down and knock a lot of the effects down also. Looks cool on the PS3 though!

Bioshock looks gorgeous in really high res and details, just make sure you patch it as it is buggy as hell out the box!!!

GTA 4 and Assasins Creed might be worth a look for what you're after, I remember the former was making lot's of pc's sweat when it was released and I can only assume the same of Assasins Creed given how it looks on consoles.

Think I'll give Assasin's Creed and Mass Effect a try, thanks for the suggestions.

Flog it and get a nice big TV and PS3 or 360. IMNSHO PC gaming is well on it's way out despite everyone's best efforts and the need for a super duper penis extension PC has dwindled away like a snowflake alightening on the Sun

Re: Stonking new system, nothing to use it for!

Assassins creed is well, well worth a look. 1 of my fave games of the last year.

Warhammer Dawn of War II was the 1st game I've absolutely binged and completed in the space of a few days in absolutely donkey's years. Really addictive mix of RTS and RPG and its totally original gameplay, not particularly graphic intensive though.

Red Alert 3 is good for a laugh.

GTA IV on my 4870 512MB wouldn't let me set everything to highest!! Looked amazing regardless though. Fantastic game. Your 1GB version should handle it.

Tell you what is graphically stunning, FEAR 2 Project Origin. Pushed my system as well at highest settings (i do play at 1920x1200) it is a site to behold though, and genuinely quite scary. Completed it within a week though but it is a solid FPS.

Crysis Warhead is arguably better than the 1st one. Just more fun to play I thought, more 'smash and grab' and the graphics are naturally, about as good as it gets

PC gaming isn't dead. Most lucrative and widely used gaming platform actually. Have a look at this

Not sure if you are in to flight simming, but X-Plane will bring ANY system to its knees.

I've been enjoying Empire: Total War recently, if you like fairly comprehensive RTS's then it is very good. It also looks pretty ace with everything pumped onto full.

Re: Stonking new system, nothing to use it for!

I've never been a fan of the Total War series, but they're known for being pretty tough on hardware. Very big on micro-management though..

Hellgate was nice, but i got utterly bored with the environment. I was hoping for Diablo with guns.. what they made felt like it had been, well, cobbled together.

CoD: Modern Warfare looks absolutely stunning on maximum resolution and is remarkably light on systems. You'll blitz it with the 4870. I see you've played World At War, but personally i think Modern Warfare was much better. I'm not much of a fan of FPS's on the whole, but MW actually had a decent storyline to go on.

Heh, flight simming is a laugh too, i've got X-Plane 7 which was amazing at the time. The new one, i think they're up to 9, looks great - but i fear FSX will tax your system more.

HAWX looks quite pretty for a casual air combat game..

Steer well clear from GTA - it's not worth the hassle. It's like they did the port overnight!

Assassin's Creed gets my vote for just stunning visuals, along those lines - try out Mirror's Edge

What else.. X3:Re-Union is a great game in terms of sheer scale - it takes an age to get into though, but you can build absolutely massive complexes.

Nah, FSX doesnt calculate a flight model on the fly like X-Plane. FSX uses a crappy look up table system and then moves the planes around accordingly. (i have heard that they have implemented a simple flight model similar to x-planes but not sure)

X-Plane calculates the accelerative forces from every part of the plane at 15Hz, and then has to display an awesome world model alongside it. This world contains scenery objects which in large amounts really hit the CPU hard.

Re: Stonking new system, nothing to use it for!

    That is indeed true

Out of the box though, i think FSX looks nicer - regardless of actual processing. That said, if you install the 60GB scenery pack..
