Riddick - Assault on Dark Athena

Today I'm in a sulk. A 35 year old, grown up, adult, middle class man-sulk...

I loved the original Escape from Buther Bay, indeed it was one of the first games that I bought for the xbox and I subsequently went out and bought the PC remix (which was even better).

I was really looking forward to Dark Athena, to have another run through of Butcher Bay after a good smacking with the pretty stick and follow up with a good few hours of novel Riddick fun. Cracking.

Then I read this at Techdirt -> http://www.techdirt.com/blog.php?tag...les+of+riddick

Atari, in their grave wisdom, have wrapped the lovely Riddick goodness in SecuROM... Something I have lived with in other titles, but this time have limited to three installs with no revocation! This I wont live with and I have had to cancel my pre-order

If EA, the original onerous DRM meisters are publishing revocation tools left, right and centre for their products following the beating they got from their customers I find it incredulous that Atari have jumped in this direction...

Anyways, I've got to get back to my sulking...

THis was leaked with a bad crack very recently so it was nuked.
As soon as a good release is out I can see it being very popular because of silly DRM restrictions.

Well I liked the old one, and given that it's on the 360 it's bound to look a few years old

Actually they haven't. I don't know where you heard this from. It does have DRM, but it's not SecuROM.

Re: Riddick - Assault on Dark Athena

This is what one of the Admins had to say over at Atari.us:

OK guys, first I want to say thanks for being patient, now to get right to it.

There has been a lot of talk lately about DRM and how it was implemented in Riddick and there is a lot of misinformation being tossed around. I just wanted to get word out to you guys that we are listening to your concerns but I also wanted to let you know a few facts.

As of today only about 10% of all the Riddick PC games sold have been activated more than once.

One Riddick serial number alone had over 50,000 activation attempts, so people do try and pirate games.

Only four people have been unable to play on the PC due to DRM. In all cases the parties involved first tried to activate illegal serials. They were banned initially but then were manually unbanned when they purchased legal copies of the game.

DRM is not designed to keep you from playing the game, nor is it designed to combat any after market sales. After market sales for PC games are nowhere near what they are for console games anyway, aside from ebay, craigslist and yard sales I can’t even really think of anywhere to get used PC games.

I want to make it clear that there are people who are monitoring activations so if and when we get into an issue with people not being able to play that issue will be addressed. Should the case get so severe it effects a large portion of the gamers, more activations will be set in place as needed. Further down the line the DRM will be removed and a new unprotected exe will be released.

So to summarize if you buy Riddick legally on the PC we are going to do our best to make sure you can play it for as long as you want.
I hope this helps answer some of your questions / concerns.

  11. Received thanks from:

Good info - still doesn't change my mind though. They need to learn to strike a balance better, as others have.

... Agree. I read this on the Atari forums, I was hoping that they were going to announce the availability of a revocation tool, that would make the DRM a little easier to deal with. As it stands their statement doesn't mean a great deal in real terms.

I'd say this bit means a great deal:
Further down the line the DRM will be removed and a new unprotected exe will be released.
But yeah, their last game that had online activation had a revoke tool (alone in the dark) - I'm not sure how the switch from securom to tages affects the possibility of one.

Re: Riddick - Assault on Dark Athena

It's not out in the UK yet, you can imagine shops not being happy if you could buy the game online long before being able to buy it on the street.

If you don't want to use a DVD you can buy a disk-less version when it's released over here I expect.

It's daft releasing it in different regions on different dates - always has been. If anything that encourages piracy (imagine if it were cracked now) because end users feel shortchanged at having to wait (especially in an era of instant-download online sales). I usually end up with a hard copy of a game because it's cheaper than Steam or D2D - and so the crack-route is the way to go for me.

I spent ages at the w/e looking for my far cry 2 disc
