Question 360/ps3 - and not a flame war

Okay, so I'm hoping this won't spark a fanboy/flame war, but I just wanted to ask the following question.

I've convinced my parents that if we are to get Rockband 1/2, it'll only really be worth it if we get it on a PS3/360. So now getting a PS3/360 is seriously being considered.

Considering things other than Rockband (current/upcoming big/fun games), which platform would Hexus recommend?

I personally am worried about underuse, as we have a Wii which me and my little brother love going on (super smash bros/Rayman raving rabbids), and I have my PC (currently playing Bioshock, Crysis, Team Fortress 2, The Witcher), and I even started Shadow of the Colossus on my PS2.

In your opinion(s), is it a) Worth getting it, and if so,
    b) Xbox 360 or PS3?

I don't know if you would use it enough to make it worthwhile buying a pc espically as you have a good PC.
It really depends if you want to download extra song (at extra cost) and if you are i'd then say 360 as rock band have exclusive deals with them it seems and it's cheaper.

Re: 360/ps3 - and not a flame war

I own all three, the XBox being the last console I purchased.

It depends on what games you like and what you want out of your console. Do you want High Def playback films (Blu-Ray) if thats a yes, PS3. If no, then what console has the exclusives that you want to play. If one has more or a good alternative (such as Killzone 2 to Gears of War 2) then get the other.

Do you want a media centre type console? The PS3 has built in Internet, free on line networking, a store based in actual money rather than a points system.

If you have mates which own the consoles go round and have a play with them and see which you like.

id say think of cost really since you have a wii and a good pc so id say a 360 since you can get one for ~£100 now : albeit being second hand it comes with 2 year warranty from game(think its premium/pro). You could buy a BR drive for the pc for ~50 and then your sorted .

Re: 360/ps3 - and not a flame war

I own both and to be honest there's not much to put one on top over the other if you're not fussed about blu-ray playback. Obviously the Xbox is the cheaper of the two but it doesn't come with built in wireless internet and xbox live is gonna set you back the best part of forty quid a year.

Having said that though it does have a slightly better back catalogue of games at the moment and you do see where your forty quid a year goes when the time comes to do a system update and the PS3 is out of action for a good couple of hours at a time but the Xbox is updated and ready to play again in minutes. The Xbox is also a bit easier to use with the Rockband and Guitar Hero games in my experience because it'll let you use Guitar Hero controllers for Rockband and vice versa which the PS3 won't always depending on which game your playing.

PS3 by far, rechargable controllers out the box, built in Wi-Fi so no having to buy a wi-fi adaptor, free online access, unlike M$, built in bluray player. Need i go on.

Yes i have access to both but prefer the PS3 over the Xbox 360, i personally don't like the idea of buying a defective product, that you know at some point is going to display 3 red rings and has to be sent back.

Re: 360/ps3 - and not a flame war

    I own both too.

If you want a games console, the Xbox is a better bet IMO.
The PS3 is a cracking Blue-ray player though. Sadly it just doesn't have that many games that I can't buy on the Xbox for cheaper.

Xbox live is 40quid a year, which is a bit steep. Having said that though I've found it to be far more reliable than PSN, although it's probably more down to the games than Sony.

Oh I get it cheaper than that - good mates with people who work at GAME
I happened to forget this year though and it auto-renewed (Even with an invalid Credit Card :\), which stung.

Re: 360/ps3 - and not a flame war

It depends on how you plan on using it.

You do not have to pay that £40 for LIVE. You can still download updates and patches for your games without it. If it is just something that you and your family get together to play on.

Out of the 2 I think the PS3 seems to be better built from what I hear. I have never used a PS3 myself.
I think it is best to check out the titles. You have a decent PC from the sound of it. I have found that when using my 360 with my PC monitor that the 360 looks noticably lower res than PC. So most multi platform games will look better on your PC. it's more eclusives that you should worry about.

Another thing to add - You can get GAMES FOR WINDOWS LIVE. So on my PC I created a gamer tag. And Your XBox 360 can use the same Gamer tag. So with points you buy for getting extra content in games, you can share the points between the two. Also your 360 uses Windows Media Centre so you can stream media between the 2.

Re: 360/ps3 - and not a flame war

There are advantages and disadvantages of both, and since I own both I think my opinion is fairly well informed..

    XBOX -
*By far the best online service
    *Best back catalogue of games
    *Cheaper games
    *Initial Cost of Console

    PS3 -
    *Inbuilt BluRay player
    *Better media capabilities
    *Inbuilt web browser
    *Free online service

From the benefits I have listed you can see that the XBox is a much better games machine and if you plan on doing any online gaming, YES you have to pay for it, but it is SO worth it as it is so much more stable and usable than the PSN.

The back catalogue of games for the XBox is huge, and some titles can be picked up for less than £5 in Game / Gamestation etc. The back catalogue of PS3 games consists largely of remakes of XBox games, sprinkled with the odd original title. However, from what I have played so far, the XBox exclusive games are better than the PS3s...... Gears of War 2 > Killzone 2 etc.

Someone mentioned the rechargeable controllers... This is in my opinion a big downfall of the PS3. I don't care that the XBox controllers don't have a built in battery because at least you can easily slip off the back cover and replace one set of rechargeable batteries with another. I keep one set on charge all the time so if they do run out I can easily replace them and carry on gaming. The only way to do this with a PS3 is to have at least 2 controllers and always have one on charge. I have found however that the PS3 controllers run out of battery a lot quicker than my XBox Controller, but I guess this partly depends on what rating of batteries you use on the XBox controller.

Add on the cost of the Wireless adaptor and XBL and I would still personally consider an Xbox first before a PS3.... Why do I have a PS3? Well im a games addict and need everything worth having, But the real reason? I needed something to keep me content whilst my Xbox is being fixed. Do I think the PS3 is indestructible? No. I've actually experienced more crashes on the PS3 and 2 of my friends have burnt out their BluRay drives and had to get them repaired. Sony are also usually rather less willing and helpful when it comes to warranties.

Thanks for all the replies, I think Handscombmp sums it up pretty much perfectly...

I've been wondering whether its even worth getting it. I have a PS2 and a Wii, along with my PC, for me and my lil' bro, we play Super Smash Bros Brawl and Rayman Raving Rabbids on the Wii, and Ben10 on the PS2 (I wanted him to play some 'real' platforming aswell as fun little mini games and brawling). . .

Rockband on the Wii and PS2 is supposed to be OK, but not brilliant, and the fact that out PS2 will probably be shelved for good some time within the next year, I'm reluctant to get those versions. . .

What about some other 'family' games on those consoles? Or games that I could pick up with my little (nearly 9 year old) brother?
